Only if the majority of users were using CCST , if they are a tiny minority it's not so noticeable.
Many of these will be because the gateline is programmed to reject certain categories which are now probably disproportionately represented amongst the ccst tickets remaining.

Do these tickets cause more hassle at gatelines that the CC type? If significant numbers of crumpled tickets that won't scan have to be looked at and the staff open the barrier to let passengers through, that would increase queues and create more work.

Quite the opposite actually a gateline at a major London terminus has a 49% acceptance rate for CCST and 92% for Barcoded tickets
Most the delays I experience are with codes on phones - both problems reading it and people effectively blocking a particular gate while they bring up the ticket. With a working ccst as long as I get the “feed” right I can just about pass through without breaking stride.

Edit - just seen the comments about folding into thirds, will try that next time as I usually fold in half and try and force into the wallet.

Beware folding the aztec code into a wallet. Some scanners such as the phone cameras commonly used or the readers on ticket gates simply will not scan them through the transparent plastic.
It's what I always do when I get these tickets and I've never found that to be a problem yet. The transparent window does need to be clean and smooth.

Obviously anecdotal and a relatively small sample as I usually use CCST.

Agreed.

One of the things that’s harder to recognise with an e-ticket is when the barrier is rejecting the ticket. With a physical ticket it is obvious it’s being spat back out and the barrier isn’t opening, an e-ticket someone is likely to stand there trying to get it to scan (again).

What, like cross-London tickets and Day Travelcards? None of these would be rejected on account of the gate programming.

Amusingly when I was at Littlehampton yesterday the staff were trying to unjam the gate because a pensioner had somehow managed to feed his bog roll ticket in to the CCST slot. He didnt know what the barcode reader was for. I wonder if that counts as a CCST or e ticket rejection?

Reminds me that at Gatwick Airport i have seen both tourists trying to insert oyster cards in to the CCST slot and tourists trying to scan CCST mag stripe tickets on the oyster reader.

Is there an abbreviation yet for the barcoded tickets printed onto ordinary paper, roughly A7 size and shape? These aren't really 'paper roll' and aren't thermal printed, so they're different from the long, narrow format that PRT implies. If ticket offices and TVMs are going to issue barcoded tickets, these seem like the best format to me.
The ones from eticket TVMs?

It was never 50% failure back when Victoria was mostly paper tickets. Mabye cubic aren't putting as much effort into updating them anymore. GTR also flag any Railcard tickets up which can't help

I suspect some of these rejections will be deliberate. For example I've come across all of these at various times:

- Railcard discounted tikets so that a 'manual' check can take place
- Advance tickets so staff can check you're catching the correct train!
- Ticket types not set up correctly to be accepted, spoecifically a Gold Card discounted Stevenage to London Zones 1-6 Super Off Peak Travelcard (weekend version)

I've found NR barriers to be much more "hit and miss" than LU barriers. At least twice I've had a perfectly valid ticket accepted by a LU barrier and then rejected by a NR barrier at the same station. I'm 99% sure that in at least one such case the ticket was then accepted by a NR barrier at the end of the journey.

My suspicision is that whatever database the barriers use to determine valid tickets simply didn't recognise the tickets I was using or possiblly incorrectly implemented peak restrictions.

I find them slower to use - I can get a CCST into a barrier and pick it up at the return slot and walk through the barrier without stopping ( as long as it's not a programmed reject, of course! ).

With the bog roll ticket, I have to pause at the reader to make sure it is scanned properly. Takes me about twice as long.

Yes - I've only had them from WMT TVMs. I suppose I assumed some TVMs were printing on continuous roll thermal paper and others producing the ordinary paper tickets. Maybe I'm mistaken and actual paper-roll tickets are only from ticket offices and portable machines with TVMs either issuing CCST or the new (and sensibly-proportioned) paper tickets.

Agreed. I specifically went from using an ITSO smartcard to CCST for my season ticket as I was fed up of the read delays at barriers, however small they are.

But you don't mind queuing to get it replaced every couple of weeks?

Back in the day, my CCST annual metrocard only needed replacing once or twice a year, in spite of going through the barriers at Leeds every day.

They have had that for over twenty years. It was called RSP9599/ATW before and changed to RSP9599/TFW recently. I remember getting those tickets with Welsh on the back in the mid 2000s. I think they just use the normal RSP9599 stock when they run out of the Welsh language one.
I don't ever recall getting the Welsh version, just the standard 9599. Surprising considering that the booking office I use is in a very Welsh speaking area. I wonder if they know this ticket stock exists?

I went from CCST Season Ticket to ITSO partly because it did need replacing a few times a year, but mostly when I was told it wasnt valid for break of journey at Hove.
