The featured image for this short article is the petrol motor-car used by the Croydon District Engineer of the London, Brighton, and South Coast Railway, in connection with his duties. The car was block-signalled in the same way as a train and carried head code discs. It was included in The Railway Magazine of July 1906. ...

Splendid images, Roger. Thank you. Is it known which firm built the LBSC car? At first glance, the radiator suggests Rolls-Royce, but surely not. Alldays and Onions perhaps? An interesting question is how this car were driven. Most Edwardian cars have their various throttle and ignition controls conveniently located on the steering column for ease of continuous adjustment. Without this column I wonder were these controls were placed.

Further down the article is a picture of a very similar vehicle (same shape of bonnet even down to the louvres in the side) captioned as being built by A&O

It would be my guess that it was an Alldays & Onions.

Your guess would be correct according to Service Stock of the Southern Railway (Kidner, Oakwood, 1993). The writing was LB&SCR Engineers Inspection Car Northern Division and it was based at Croydon.

Anyone interested in early rail inspection vehicles really should visit the Southern Railway Museum. It has a whole hall of such vehicles, and road rail conversions.
