I see that Chiltern services into and out of Marylebone have ground to a halt yet again. Does anybody have inside knowledge as to why the signalling system/track keeps failing on the route from Neasden South Junction. It seems to be a weekly occurence.

I know that Chiltern keep getting the blame for it when there's not alot they can do about it, not that that's any comfort to the passengers who have been inconvenienced yet again. I can quite understand why people are getting frustrated with the situation.

Seems some trains are on the move now. However some passengers held for a very very long time. 1H25 running 117 late mostly accrued sitting between Bicester and Haddenham & Thame Parkway. I'm told communications not great on the ground, trains sat at Bicester North and other stations with not much information given and nothing running north to bail towards Banbury either.
(Also some silly surge pricing from the likes of Uber wanting £90 to go to Oxford or Milton Keynes!)
Friend on 1H30 running 50L after a long wait at Bicester North have been told they are going to Marylebone but I expect they'll get dumped at West Ruslip.

Still no trains currently arriving or departing Marylebone. Trains being turned at West Ruislip and Harrow-on-the-Hill.

Isn’t it track circuit faliure most of the times?

Not usually at Marylebone, more often around Neasden area.

Track circuit failure. Route reported locked from P2 to Down Main.

According to Chiltern's Facebook page, at least one stranded train was evacuated onto the ballast.

If a track circuit fails anywhere along a set route through junction points after the signal has cleared, sectional route locking over any points beyond the failure will be held indefinitely. That prevents the signaller individually controlling the points to the opposite position even after the signals have all been successfully replaced. The interlocking thinks the signalled train has passed the signal and therefore must hold the route locked until all the track circuits up to and over the junction are clear. Copying previous French high speed principles, HS1 introduced a 'Local Release of signal controls' facility, operated by first response technicians attending the site, allowing points to be moved remotely by the signaller under such circumstances, once the tech has confirmed the points are functional and there is no train on or approaching them. Elsewhere in UK, NR typically relies on local operators going out to manually wind or pump point mechanisms while technicians tackle the initiating TC failure. The location of the fault, the points, the number and location of suitable staff at the time, and what's going on elsewhere simultaneously, etc all play a part in how fast response and rectification can be achieved.

Chiltern have now tweeted that disruption is expected for rest of the evening, no trains will use Marylebone this evening.
Usual ticket acceptance in place, GWR to Reading for XC to Banbury/Birmingham, Avanti and LNWR for Birmingham as well, and London Underground.

Looks like 1Y52 and 1H53 are bearing down upon Marylebone now. Hopefully that means some down trains will start to leave soon but who knows?

I thought it was said that the Track Circuit Failure was on the line leaving the station so surely trains being able to get into the station doesn’t mean trains can leave.

They tweeted no trains all evening, then 40 minutes later have said oh no trains will run hourly. Rightfully some quite unhappy people in the replies.

True.
Traksy is showing 1J49, 2B49, and 1T50 all lined up ready to leave at their respective times, either formed from trains that just arrived or ones that were there since this morning, but then some other trains doing nothing. Nearest up train at Risborough so people who tubed it out to West Ruislip or Wembley hoping to go from there are gonna probably have a bit of a long wait now

I was P2 to down main, which I think crosses all up routes except into p1

If that’s the information they were given by NR and then the situation changed, that’s hardly Chiltern’s fault.

Looks like an hourly service is being introduced to major destinations (Aylesbury, Oxford, Birmingham)

Apparently there’s about 50 people waiting at WRU, and they’ve just been told no trains until half eight. I kinda see why in terms of running only 1tph MYB-HWY instead of 2 as usual and making it the one that stops at DGC, but still, not very good

Why on earth can they not insert a West Ruislip stop into one of the trains? It’s really poor to tell people to go to West Ruislip to get trains because there are none at Marylebone, only for there to be trains from Marylebone and not West Ruislip.

I'd guess almost every Marylebone train will be leaving full and standing for a bit...

I know! Trains have been passing through apparently semi-empty (probably because everyone’s given up and taken another route).
I don’t think anyone on a train would care at this point about a couple minutes of delay to make sure everyone can get home

Well, I was on the 1H66 which is going through to Marylebone. They put on an extra train from Banbury 1H67 I think. Lots of announcements on the 1H66 saying there will a train starting from Banbury with lots of space. Even routed 1H66 onto platform 2 so cross platform interchange onto platform 1 for the 1H67. I counted precise 0 passengers taking that option. So there is a rather empty train heading that way.

No trains have been leaving Marylebone ‘semi-empty’ since the first couple of trains left when service was resumed.

There’s a 1914 Marylebone to High Wycombe which stops at both Ruislip stations so I don’t know where your half eight information has come from.

No it doesn’t. It stops at South Ruislip but not West Ruislip, so you could get the Central line to South Ruislip I suppose.

Image shows that the 19:14 skips West Ruislip

It did tonight. I saw it on the screen at Marylebone and heard it announced. Were you at Marylebone this evening?

In ye olden days could some trains have run to Paddington via Greenford/West Ealing (paths/knowledge permitting)?

Yes potentially but in more recent years (post privatisation) only Aylesbury men signed Paddington and I only ever heard of that happening during planned closures of Marylebone.

Sometimes it would make sense for companies to have an alternative terminus for when things go belly up.

In an ideal world this is a great idea.
But with any knowledge of the industry, pathings, timings, route knowledge and competency, you’ll begin to realise how farfetched and unrealistic this is.

That being said, with OOC being developed, there is still a speculative plan for the line from South Ruislip to reopen… but even then, the capacity is limited for the sort of contingency you’re suggesting.
