Can someone explain the validity issue here, please. I requested a London Terminals ticket because I want to travel into Charing Cross but the Southern ticket site offers London Thameslink which to some extent has a great validity along the Thameslink route to St Pancras. However, according to the National Rail website it appears that a London Thameslink ticket is NOT valid to Charing Cross. Is this correct? If it is, how do I ensure I get the London Terminals ticket I requested?

Yes, you're correct London Thameslink isn't valid into Charing Cross.

The issue is that when you put London Terminals into the search box, it looks for journeys to any of the members of that group. Then for each journey it looks for fares valid on that journey - this step doesn't consider your search query, so just picks whatever the cheapest possible fare is, London Thameslink in this case. (this is useful for the majority of people, but is inconvenient for some more knowledgeable people)

I don't know how the Southern site works - it seems to be showing you various alternative fare options, but not for different destinations? Which isn't very good if so. A different retailer (the forums site will for example) will allow you to override the default fare with a London Terminals fare

You are correct; the London Thameslink ticket would not be accepted at Charing Cross. It is only valid as far as London Bridge on that route (or Blackfriars, if you prefer).

If you want to travel to Charing Cross, I would suggest entering that as the destination to ensure you're offered appropriate fares.

The way the Southern/GTR sites operate is as @OscarH describes; the suggested fare is the cheapest one that's valid for the selected journey, even if the fare destination doesn't match what you searched for (if this wasn't done, people would often be overcharged as it's regularly cheaper to get a ticket that isn't to the exact location you have searched for).

You are given the option to select a more expensive fare towards the bottom of the screen, under the "See all available fares" button. You need to select the £15.85 fare to London Terminals, routed "Not valid for travel on Gatwick Express services", for a ticket that's valid to Charing Cross.

As it happens, it would be cheaper to walk from Blackfriars (you'd want to be at the very front of the train for the exit on the north side of the Thames). If you'd prefer not to walk, you could buy a London Bridge to Charing Cross Anytime Day Return for £4.75, making for a total of £14.85 - still cheaper than the above London Terminals fare, albeit less flexible as you'd be tied to travelling via London Bridge.

Using the bus from London Bridge to Charing Cross would be cheaper than the train (it's £1.75 each way, or free if you have an English concessionary bus pass), and depending on your actual destination in the west end, it might work out better overall. If it's somewhere very close to Charing Cross then the train is obviously better.

Unless I am doing this wrong, the Forum's site does not recognise London Terminals at all. You can enter London Charing Cross and it quotes a price, but it is only when you click on an obscure link "These tickets will not cover your travel between some stations." that you find your ticket is only valid to London Blackfriars! "Transfer to London Charing Cross - Your ticket does not cover this leg of the journey. You may want to use other transport methods to get between these stations."

Thanks, I guess the Forum's ticket engine does sort of get you there!

Basically, the suggestion is to walk or get a bus/Tube to Charing Cross since this is deemed quicker and cheaper than changing at London Bridge. However, if you don't want such suggestions then you could enter "via Waterloo East" as this would force the train option to appear.

London (Any) would be the equivalent. It makes it clearer it isn't guaranteeing you a London Terminals ticket to try and avoid some of the confusion you were caused

The OP’s original screenshot shows a travelcard option for £13.95 so that would be marginally cheaper plus offer full flexibility to return via any route.

Ah yes, that would of course be the best option. I was wondering whether a Travelcard wouldn't perhaps be worthwhile!

Whilst I understand the logic of the forums site, the frequency of London Bridge to Charing Cross and the average journeytime of 7 mins means no normal is going to travel to London Bridge and then walk or get a bus/tube to save pence. You can transfer from the Thameslink Platform to the Charing Cross Bound Platform quicker than you can get to either the tube or bus stops. From the OPs origin Three Bridges I cant think of a destination where it would be advantageous to do this, if you want the West End youd most likely go to Victoria.

The cheapest off-peak return fare for this journey will usually be a Travelcard rather than a rail-only ticket to London Terminals. As others have noted you might be able to save money by taking a bus for part of the journey at the London end.
The days when you could buy a cheaper rail-only ticket valid to *all* S.R. London Terminals on the this route are gone.
