Aswell as romanian women bugging me to buy 'The Big Issue', I've had them try to sell me gold too, the only thing they managed to get out of me was a polite f*** off. :p

I'm not sure what the requirements are overseas to sell the Big Issue, but here they are usually sold by the disabled, homeless and long term unemployed etc.

Usually sold by men in the mid to late 30's, very, very rarely I have seen females selling them though.

I'm sure they are here in Australia, but the description you give of these Romanian woman I can't say I've seen any around here as of late, that too goes towards Gypsies or Romani people.

Copies of the Big Issue sell for AUD$5.00 and I never see anyone buying them either.

Reminds me of when Gordon Brown (remember him?) called tat OAP a bigot.

In the inital conversation, she asked him: "Where are all the se Eastern Europeans coming from?"

Well.....Eastern Europe?

Gillian Duffy.

My opinion is simple.

Load, take aim, fire.

That's a bit severe surely, she did accept his apology ... :D

If he'd said Eastern Europe at the time it really couldn't have gotten him in much worse trouble than what he did say, I still wouldn't have voted for him but I'd have admired his comic timing ;)

Haven't seen any EEW's selling Big Issues round here, just late30's/early40's British men, not sure what Leeds is like now but they used to be on every corner.

I find earphones are a good way to get past the Charity/Survey-sters round here without too much engagement, with or without them being attached to an mp3 player ;)

There's plenty in the various pedestrian bottlenecks of Edinburgh too. If I wasn't of sound mind I'd think they were all the same person. One of them cannily hangs around a supermarket, she watches people walk past her and buy their lunch, then tries them again when they come out.

I dunno if she's still there as I've not been past for a while, but have you seen the woman at the top of Dundas Street, who'll chase people down the street and shout across to you if you cross the road to avoid her

Hate Chuggers - classic line is "Don't you want to help prevent cancer?" or somethign to that effect. My response is "Yes, but I don't need to pay you to do it".

The chuggers jump from charity to charity, so they don't care about the charity at all.. all they want is your bank details and signature. I wonder if you could catch them out by talking about another charity and see if they correct you?!

And I hate them claiming they don't take any money from the charity, as if they're volunteers. Technically they don't, but they get paid by the agency that the charity pays. A nice con trick for the gullible, but I am surprised there's anyone left that doesn't know the score.

That was kind of cruel, talk about kicking a man when he's down (can't find a tiny violin smily)

She said she'd never vote Labour again, but she said that the coalition had gone all wrong. Then she sold her story to the Express.

She must have a very boring life.

I may have been told wrong (but I dont think so), but one of them told me they are paid for by the government. Its a scheme set up by the government to get people into work and to help out the charities. The charities themselves dont pay for them.
She may have been bending the truth slightly, but i doubt it. Spoke to her most days i was in town, and she knew there was no chance of me signing up. So she had no reason to lie.

Anyway. Someone I know has a good idea. When you walk past one of them, say something totally daft and unrelated. By the time they have worked out what you are on about, you are past them. Havent tried it myself, but sounds an idea!

The company that provides chuggers advertises occasionally (seen in Metro before) but I forget the name. I highly doubt it's the Government, and I'm not sure why the tax payer would fund people to harass members of the public on the street.

In any case, I can't stand the fact that these people probably don't care (or know much about) the charity they're 'working for' that day/week. Then, if you do decide to donate it takes a year before the charity makes anything. I can't emphasise enough; if you feel like supporting a charity, cut out the middle men and give direct.

I've tried lots of things but now think the best is to totally ignore them - as in completely fail to acknowledge them - when they're coming up and following you asking how your day is, or whatever crap line they choose to use.
