I guess that's the biggest issue with paper destinations! No easy answer either - there are bound to be regulations on how bright, controlling light spill etc.
In this instance, as the 63 only operates during daylight hours I'd argue that a clearly printed route number and clearly printed destination on boards/paper displayed on the front and side of the vehicle would be within the spirit of the Regulations if not totally compliant - an effort has been made.

A hand-scribbled number partly obscured by the wiper arm less so.

Agreed, but as the last journey doesn't finish until after 6pm it's not during daytime at this time of year, and the morning run unlikely to start in full light.

Daft questions - do buses have lighter sockets, or some source of 12/24V DC power? Should be fairly simple to do a light box for a printed destination if power is available.

Only if you have the correct program. There are several such programs, and this is a 20 year old bus ... not so easy if it's old tech. Of course, it could simply be that the screen is broke!!
The blinds in those Solars may be awkward to programme instantly with them having a colour block for service numbers on the left hand side of the front display: https://flic.kr/p/2o8qcYx
They had issues the last time they borrowed an ex trentbarton Solar from Connexionsbuses, although at least this one ain't going round with "Chip Shop Special" on the displays.

Solo YJ60PFN was less excusable with it having just standard Hanover units that Hulleys already use, although has since been programmed.

There will be some form of electrical supply point to power the ticket machine, but I'm not familiar with this vehicle so can't say for sure. A light box is pretty impractical to be fair, would require some sort of fixings to stop it moving around and can't introduce any glare to the windscreen for obvious reasons.

I was trying to be kind to Hulleys (given I keep being told I'm picking on them!) by suggesting using a bus with no working destination on the 63 with temporary signage was just about ok (as the 63 runs LARGELY in daylight hours and the bus only does the 63 so only one number needed). However, I'd suggest if the vehicle is on loan still next week and a better solution hasn't been found that is poor!

If Hulley's are guilty so are TM Travel, another user of cast off vehicles from fleets around the country. And probably a lot of other operators working on shoe string budgets.

If these are bad, try Globe Holidays of Barnsley, many, E200’s, E300’s & E200 MMC’s regularly running with paper in front windscreen

Former Hulleys' E200MMCs YX74 ODM and ODP are now in use with .... Go-Coach!

Some of the others are now with Metrobus

Always ways around these problems, that's what us engineers live for, solving challenges. I'm wondering if you could do something backlit if you used a translucent medium to print the numbers on. Held against the windscreen should avoid glare, and it could be fairly lightweight so tape or suckers to hold it on.

That's sort of what I was getting at earlier - is there an official timeframe? Or are they unlikely to get pulled and we just hope they sort it in a decently timely manner?

I do recall when Hulleys had a Solo on loan to DCT (not long before they went bust) which had a very professionally printed destination board. I did wonder if that meant DCT often didn't have working destinations - or had so many loan vehicles it was the more practical option.

Such a thing already exists, it's called an LED blind. You can buy them new from the manufacturer or go to one of the Barnsley scrap yards and get one out of a scrap bus. They're not expensive. Why pratt around with a DIY effort, just buy the proper thing.

Its a legal requirement, rather like your car headlight working. I very much doubt the local Constabulary will pull over a bus they see workout a working blind, but the onus is on the owner to fix at the earliest opportunity. I believe - though others may correct me if I'm wrong - a vehicle not complying with PSVAR regulations would be a MOT failure

True, but it's considerably quicker and easier to stick something in the windscreen that is 'acceptable'. The fact it's a loan bus means they won't have capacity for it to sit around until an engineer is available to fit and program a proper blind - far better it be moving passengers.

I guess it's that conflict between getting it working but having to cancel services while that is happening, or running the service but it not being fully 'right'. Who are they more likely to get in trouble with, the TC or the local plod?

From what I've seen on here the Scania is usually on the 63. That service finishes at 6.08pm. The bus will be back in the yard for 6.30pm. A new blind could be fitted by 7.30pm. Or on a Sunday. Why would service have to be dropped??

I'm not sure they've got the facilities to work effectively on vehicles in the dark. And I guess it depends when the necessary people would work. However, I would agree with you that if it doesn't get fixed this weekend then they are pushing the limit of possibly valid excuses.

From memory I believe there is also a company in Chesterfield which repairs these blinds, I'd be very surprised if they don't have the ability to program them as well, and would likely fit if Hulleys don't have anyone able to do so.

All this talk of non-functioning blind displays is in another league! Yes, of course they should be working, but it's hardly unusual for buses to be going around for ages with non-functioning displays. One of First's Cornwall Sprinters has had blank displays for several months now (as of last month when I last saw it).

Perhaps so, but it's another example I'm afraid of a company that seems to have lost the desire, or the financial ability, or both, to be on top of things like this. Hulleys used to have one of the smartest fleets around. Now it looks like the best they are aiming for to quote a post up-thread is 'not as bad as Globe' which is hardly a high bar!

On the other end of the scale, last month NCT withdrew it's whole Yutong E10 fleet for a morning due to the blinds not working correctly, causing a bit of an operational nightmare! Shows both ends of the bus operator scale though!

Perhaps if they didn't buy and sell buses so often it might help. If the fleet was more stable, then they wouldn't have to fix the blinds every five minutes (or not as the case may be).

Followers of this thread since post #1394 will be delighted to learn that the Scania in question (FJ55BZT) now has a fully functioning destination display. My photo below shows the vehicle in Bakewell yesterday (Thursday 20 Feb 2025). It was tracking as Hulley's Solo 18 - YJ60PFN.

I wonder if that means 18 is still OTR. Unless that's tracking as something else - gremlins seem to be creeping back in. 3 hasn't tracked this year but is in service. 5, 8 and 23 haven't tracked recently. Not sure if 22 has had the electrics fixed yet or is still OTR, and it sounds like 10 will be OTR for a while if it's even worth repairing.

Cigarette lighters aren't common in service buses and certainly don't usually come from the manufacturers. Some may fit them afterwards if they need to use them for something.

There tends to be a rather unique three pin socket which is for the ticket machine but most operators usually just hard wire the cabling in.

Are not 5, 8 and 23 requiring MOT?

Further, surely 18 YJ60 PFN is double tracking, as it was showing on two routes at the same. time.

Possibly for 5 and 23. 8 hasn't tracked for around 6 weeks.

Ah, so likely both the Solo and the Scania tracking under the same ID. I wonder how that is even possible as there should be some sort of GUID attached to each ticket machine which could be used to differentiate.

As an aside, I guess the Scania 'decker which came from Connexions never entered service.

It‘s possible because each ticket machine will normally contain a list of all vehicles. In theory, when a machine is fitted to a particular vehicle the supervisor (or whoever does it) should ensure the correct vehicle is selected in the drop down menu. But if they forget to reset from the last bus it was fitted to, then you get duplicate tracking!

Yes, this sort of thing happens often enough around the country that references to tracked vehicles made on this site are sometimes treated with a degree of scepticism by other forum members. While bustimes is a useful site it's not of the same calibre as RealTimeTrains though it is of course handling far more data with plenty of opportunities for spurious information to find its way in to the system. Just have to accept that it has certain limitations when using it for anything more than confirming operation of specific journeys. And even that is not 100% reliable.

That’s very unfortunate. Hope the driver, and any passengers involved, are OK. This bus doesn’t seem to have tracked on Bustimes since December - was it off for repairs, being moved back to the depot maybe? As I would imagine it was off a regular route?

But the good news is it could be used on the Breezer this summer :D

It has certainly been in service as I saw it in Sheffield a couple of weeks ago..Can't recall if it was on 257 or 272.

From what I've been told everyone seems to be OK, although that's very much second hand info.

It's been in service, however they've had issues for a long time getting it to track, indeed it's a recurring problem with Hulleys E400s. I suspect the ticket machine is located such that the antennas are blocked / shielded.

It was in service, on the 170. The normal route goes under an 11'3 bridge, however when there is a double decker on the route it is supposed to take the slightly longer way which avoids this bridge. Signage near the bridge isn't great and there is no obvious overheight warning system.

This leaves Hulleys in the (hopefully temporary) situation of having no serviceable double deckers. 5 is OTR for MOT, and 16 / 22 for repairs.
