OK, so I am back in the UK for a short period.

Has anyone else noticed a pre-dominance of short, fat, raincoat and headscarf wearing old Eastern European women selling the "Big Issue".

I have been in several towns and areas, and more I more I see these women, and frankly I am convinced that somewhere in the Urals, or in the Black Sea Mountains is a factory that mass produces these women ! :D

They all look the same, same body shape, same raincoat, same socks, same black boots, same headscarf, even the same fat face !

I am sure I have seen the same women in the various travel magazines and brochures as well ?

Is it me I wonder or are we slowly being overtaken by an army of these women .... who one day will suddenly throw off their coats and scarves and rise up and carry out a bloodless putsch (Coup de'Etat) ? One week we would all be driving around in cars and the next day it is donkeys and carts and side-panniers.....and travel magazine photographers everywhere !! :D :D

They're all probably Romanian Roma who are part of organised gangs that buy and sell the Big Issue in vast quantities for a nice tidy profit. We have had trouble them with them up here in Wigan ripping people off left, right and centre. Still, that's what you get for being in the EU!

2 or 3 in Newcastle, some of them play the accordion as well. Although very badly. The only tune they know is "When the Saints Go Marching In".

There is one particular woman of the desciption given, in the pedestrianised part of the Wilmslow shopping area, usually near to Boots who sells The Big Issue, but I had been told that there was a large centre in Manchester where all these magazines were given out for distribution.

They're everywhere in Glasgow and some in the surrounding areas, though older men with regulation hats and moustaches that all look similar seem to sell it also. Not to mention young guns selling moody gold and pick pocketing.

I don't have such luck encountering them in Bungit/Peterborough as most Eastern European ladies are young and beautiful, there's 2 buses which I use in the morning which are about 80% Eastern European passengers.

To really wind up OT, yes one of them is a young blonde!

Accordion fact: It's actually impossible to play the accordion well.

I think they go out of their way to play it out of tune and missing a few notes. If I worked in a shop on Grainger Street and had to hear that every day I think I'd probably be smashing it up after a day or two.

There's plenty in the various pedestrian bottlenecks of Edinburgh too. If I wasn't of sound mind I'd think they were all the same person. One of them cannily hangs around a supermarket, she watches people walk past her and buy their lunch, then tries them again when they come out.

Chuggers do my nut in, it's silly that they advertise these 'jobs' as being "up to £450 per week income" on gumtree etc when there's absolutely no way it is possible to earn that. A good old fashioned scowl soon gets the message across. Unless they are pretty females, in which case I offer them a donation in return for a date, and watch them cringe in embarrassment :)

Hate Chuggers - classic line is "Don't you want to help prevent cancer?" or somethign to that effect. My response is "Yes, but I don't need to pay you to do it".

I've only ever bought the Big Issue once, but I always feel a little guilty when I don't. It can't be much fun standing in town all day asking people to buy your magazine.

Though I did once see a Chinese lady standing in Newcastle Central holding a big sign (like a 'For Sale' one) which was advertising a restaurant. When I went back the same way later that afternoon, she was still there, on the same spot, holding that sign.

Talk about the job from hell!

We went to Witley Bay shopping the other day and next to each doorway there was 2 women chuggers guarding the doorways. I gave nothing as I don't agree to the system of Chugging. I will give to Charity, but on my own back not by being told I need to, or asked to give £2 a month.

In Newcastle, I have noticed a mini explosion of board bearers. I certainly would not like to do that job!

I am quite interested in the useage of "colloquial" words. When did the word "chuggers" first come into common useage and what area did it first come from?

I think it comes from the sound a bucket full of money makes, I think it came into our language within the last 5 years!

Thought Chugger was a national term - made from the words 'Charity' and 'Mugger' put together. I did once get stopped by one, and signed up to do the £2 per month, but the woman didn't tell me that she was getting paid to do it (which is against the law as well). Swiftly cancelled the Direct Debit. I also later found out that to make any money as a 'profit', the charity that hires the chuggers has to keep receiving your donation of £2 per month for at least approximately one year (so in effect the Red Cross lost money when I signed up).

That's the definition!! I hate the fact that they tend to stagger themselves along a road and you literally have to zig zag to avoid them and that even though they've seen you turn down one of their colleagues, they'll still ask you!

I read somewhere a few years ago that it's only about 10% of the money that's collected that goes to charity.

there's one in Rugby too

Crossed the road to avoid her many times, (she pongs a bit).... "dankyou please, Big Issue, dankyou please..."

I wonder if all those beautiful Eastern European women in Peterborough will end up looking / smelling like her...?

;)

Either read it in the paper or it was on Have I Got News For You!

Sorry, we do not watch that programme and my wife cannot recall seeing it in The Daily Telegraph. We have just been shopping in Wilmslow this morning and there was another woman who seemed to chant IN TRIPLICATE.....

Big Issue, Big Issue, Big Issue..please.

(Felt like saying Sod Off, Sod Off, Sod Off...but my wife gave me "one of her looks", so I thought the better of it).

Reminds me of when Gordon Brown (remember him?) called tat OAP a bigot.

In the inital conversation, she asked him: "Where are all the se Eastern Europeans coming from?"

Well.....Eastern Europe?
