I've read about a now closed MPD in the Birmingham area called Saltley depot. When travelling on a Cross City service I noticed adjacent to Duddeston station there's a derelict engine shed, where the tracks serving it are overgrown and there are OHL gantries without any cables serving the lines running there. Is that the location of the former Saltley depot?

Thanks in advance.

No, that was Duddeston carriage depot I think, Saltley was on the opposite side of Saltley PSB and Lawley St Freightliner depot. One of the old buildings that DB used was recently knocked down and replaced with some portakabin jobs.

Saltley depot was here.

The site you're talking about was last used as sidings for the Castle Cement site which used to occupy the site where the student accommodation flats are now. As The Planner says, I believe it also used to be a carriage depot.

The buildings you see at Duddeston Station (on the left hand side coming from Birmingham New Street) were wagon repair shops and definitely not a Motive power depot. Saltley Depot was about 3/4 mile east of this location, and was adjacent to the Birmingham to Derby line, If you alight at Duddeston Station exit up the steps turn right onto the road (Duddeston Mill Road) walk down the "hill" passed Saltley Power signal box (new one on the left old one on the right) under the railway bridge and Saltley Depot was on the right.

Just out of interest, if you look slightly to the north of the depot, on the above link, there looks to be a derailed intermodal complete with crane.

I believe it was the 15th August 2008 that particular incident occurred with the derailed liner. I remember the lines being blocked all day - I ended up on what I think was the 0803 to Edinburgh being diverted via Lichfield City to get up to Derby and head down to Loughborough to meet up with some mates to go on a camping trip to the Bluebell Railway! Ended up a bit late but it didn't cause any problems.

Hows that for a summary :)

More specifically I think the carriage depot was used for the stabling of parcels vehicles and that the lines ran into the Parcel Force depot. The lines into the Parcel Force depot were lifted a long time ago (at least the mid 90's I think).

At Duddeston Station itself - the area where redundant OHLE masts can be found is the site of the former Wagon Repair Shops. Seen on this picture from 1987, this is on the left-hand-side going out of Birmingham:

Now demolished, on the right-hand side of the station was the electrified Carriage Shed. This picture, again taken in 1987 shows it to be closed and dewired:

Seems there has been some considerable thinning out of the 'wirescape' in and around Duddeston. By 1987 the running lines into that Carriage shed had gone by the looks of it, and presumably they would have been electrified.

On this pic of Proof House Junction taken in 1979, some long-removed parcel siding/s can be seen on the extreme left-hand-side, OHLE equipped too. I believe they were dewired and removed circa 1990:
