On Sunday 12th Jan I've got advance tickets via LNER for
1215 Liverpool lime Street - 1320 Preston
1405 Preston - 1620 Carlisle (bus replacement)
1703 Carlisle - 1820 Edinburgh
1835 Edinburgh - 1915 Camelon

LNER have notified that the journey is cancelled. Looking further out seems to be specifically the Carlisle-Edinburgh leg due to the Avanti strike.

The tickets were £48 for 1 adult and 2 children with the family railcard. Advance fares Avanti and connections.

I'm wondering if I could wing it and hope I can continue on from Carlisle either via Glasgow or via TPE (Edinburgh or Glasgow), since the train has been cancelled, or do I need to get a refund and buy another ticket at a higher price as it's been cancelled ahead of time.

Why should I have to pay a higher fare due to the strike?

@smsm1. Is this essentially one for Avanti to sort/assist, ahead of travel, noting that you're travelling with children? Likely that the 1405 Avanti RRB bus from Preston won't arrive at Carlisle station until 1620 so just after 1618 Carlisle-Edinburgh TPE train has left from platform 3, with the next one for Edinburgh not for two hours thereafter. Being able to travel via Glasgow Central *might* reduce your overall delay eventually arriving into Camelon, although noted there's no direct service from Glasgow Queen Street over to Camelon on a Sunday.

Although the ticket wouldn't technically allow it going to Larbert or Falkirk Grahamston (there are direct trains from Queen Street due to rail works on the Falkirk High line) is an option and then getting a bus.

The other option is a bus from Buchanan Street bus station.

At least the kids are a bit older now so no buggy as they can walk/run themselves.

No avanti services for Edinburgh at all on strike days. Don't see why you shouldn't be able to travel via Glasgow, but the hassle factor is much increased

Not much difference whether I go via Edinburgh or Glasgow. Not a lot in it.

So the coach I was on sat in Penrith for over 10 minutes so that it could leave at the scheduled time. Then in Carlisle the coach dropped us off a 5+ minute walk from the station, and unsure if where to go from the coach.

Arrived into Carlisle station and three staff at the entrance radioed to hold the Edinburgh train, only for the whistle to be blown moments later. The next Glasgow train was cancelled, so it was with over 1.5 hours until the Glasgow train or 2 hours until the Edinburgh train.

Took the Edinburgh train as that gave the better connection for Camelon. Ticket check on the train we're fine with the advance fare ticket even with it being an Avanti West coast and connections ticket.

The return trip due to the rail works and Avanti cancellations meant that I travelled on an Avanti West coast and connections ticket without travelling on an Avanti train.

The dispatch staff really need live bus information for situations like that so that they can hold trains for 5 minutes when the next train is cancelled. Thus avoiding 2 hours delays.

Live RRB information would be almost impossible to achieve however communication between station staff and bus co-ordinators at the bus drop off / interchange point is feasible and when I worked in Control we used to arrange holds for both trains and buses by contacting the local staff both bus and rail in circumstances like this.

@smsm1. Any eligibility here to 'Delay Repay"? (If so, who from?)
Problem is the original Avanti train from Carlisle to Edinburgh was announced as cancelled almost a week before travel, so not sure I'd it applies. Was 1 hour delay compared to the original ticket itinerary

Apparently as they are different companies they can't pass the real time running information across.
