I have received a notice of intended prosecution from Chiltern Rail as I purchased my ticket whilst being on the train and when I got off the train the Revenue and Protection Officers at the station scanned my ticket and held me back and advised I’d committed an offence.
I genuinely was not aware that buying a ticket once your journey had began was an offence.
Can you please advise the best way to deal with this.

Chiltern, like most train companies, will be amenable to settling out of court if you engage with them. You have attached the sort of advice often given on this forum as to how to structure a reply .
However, it would help if (1) you could upload the letter from Chiltern (personal stuff obscured) and (2) confirm what ticket you had and what journey you made.

I bought a ticket for my whole journey, I just purchased the ticket once I was on the train and my journey had begun rather than before.

Below is my proposed response to Chiltern, can someone please let me know if this is acceptable:
Good morning/afternoon
I am emailing you today in response to a Notice of Intended Prosecution Letter, I received from Chiltern Railways dated 10th January 2025. I received the letter on the 16th January 2025. It is in relation to an incident on 24th August 2024.
Firstly, I would like to apologise for the inconvenience caused by my actions.
I boarded the train in a rush and did not purchase my ticket until I was on the train and my journey had begun, it was a genuine oversight. I arrived at Moor Street Station and your Revenue Protection Officers scanned my ticket, stopped me and notified me my actions were wrong. I now fully understand I cannot board a train unless my ticket is purchased prior to the journey commencing. Since the incident, I always ensure my ticket is purchased prior to boarding the train.
Can you please advise if this matter can be settled without court action. I am happy to pay a penalty charge together with any costs incurred by yourselves to investigate the matter.
