Could you have caught trains from Manchester Central to either Hale, Cheshire (near Altrincham), or Hale Banks (for the different village of Hale, also in Cheshire, but on Merseyside)?

Yes, in 1966 the Manchester-Chester service went from Manchester Central to Chester Northgate via Hale. That just happens to be the working timetable I have.

This was just before Central closed in May 1969 when the services were transferred to Oxford Road. Services had been taking this route for years before then, from the construction of Manchester Central in 1880 according to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cheshire_Lines_Committee

See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manchester_Central_railway_station, for example.

Halebank was on the LNWR and wouldn’t have been served by trains from Manchester Central, which used the CLC line to Halewood instead.
