Hi,
Just a quick question: do I need to start my first travelcard journey at the station mentioned (in this case Reading) or can I start within the zones and make a return trip to/from Reading later in the day? TIA

If your ticket is issued from Reading, I would say that if you use it in the reverse direction, its validity ends upon arrival at Reading.

However, if you have an appropriate travelcard ticket, it should be possible to also get a Boundary Zone 6 ticket to/from Reading. Hopefully one of our London/SE ticket experts will be able to advise what ticket combination might work best/cheapest.

Is it also correct that if the passenger uses Contactless, travelling in London, then out to Reading and back, the price should cap at the Reading Travelcard price?

One for @MikeWh to confirm.

One solution is an inboundary travelcard plus a return from Reading to Boundary Zone 6.

Incidentally, as far as I can see, when travelling off-peak the return to boundary zone 6 and inboundary Travelcard combination is marginally cheaper than the outboundary Travelcard in any event, even if you were starting at Reading.

The off-peak contactless cap is, according to BRFares, 20p less than the outboundary travelcard, but still 10p more than the boundary zone 6 + inboundary travelcard combination. Assuming all travel is off-peak.

To be needlessly pedantic, while I agree that if the outboundary Reading to Z1-6 Travelcard were used to travel to Reading then it would not be valid to then travel from Reading towards London, I don't think it's correct to say it would have no further validity. It would still be valid within Z1-6 and on London buses (though as you'd be stuck in Reading that may not be of much use).

It's the other way around. A return from the Boundary Zone 6 to Reading

Yes it is correct. Although having just looked at the fares quoted on brfares and compared them with TfL driven fare finders, there is quite a bit of discrepancy. I am also aware of a pricing anomaly which GWR have confirmed is incorrect on TfL's systems. I have been trying to find out the scope of the problem using FOI requests, but the cyber security incident has prevented them from responding. Given that it dates back to March last year, we are rapidly approaching the time where someone with authority will need to tell TfL not to anonymise the data.
