Good Evening all,

Received a notice of intention to prosecute letter from GTR. I don't dispute it and am hoping for an out of court settlement. I was caught short ticketing at City Thameslink, having boarded from a station without barriers. I actually didn't realise I hadn't bought a ticket until I arrived at City thameslink, but once I got here I did buy a short ticket, I don't think this is relevant detail as I still short ticketed but do tell me if otherwise. Please find below my first draft of my reply, if anyone has any suggestions of bits to change this would be very much appreciated. Thank you!

Draft:

Dear Fare Evasion Manager,

Thank you for allowing me the oppurtunity to respond to your letter dated XXth XX, reference number: XYZ

On the morning of the XXth of XX I was stopped by a Revenue Protection Inspector at City Thameslink station and was unable to produce a valid ticket for my travel.

I boarded the train that morning at XXXX station, which has no barriers. I did not realise I had not purchased a ticket until I arrived at City Thameslink, and at this point I made a very short-sighted decision to buy a ticket for a shorter journey than I had actually taken in order to get through the barriers. My ticket did not scan correctly at the barriers, and I was asked to show it to the Inspector, at which point I was pulled to the side and gave my details.

I offer no excuse for the above, this was an unethical decision and I am very embarrassed about it. I recognise the damage fare evasion causes to the railways, and this is not something I wish to contribute to in the slightest. Since this incident I have made absolute sure to purchase a ticket before boarding any trains, and I will continue to do so.

I would be very grateful for the opportunity to settle this misconduct out of court. I wish to make amends by paying any fees you deem appropriate; the full, correct fare and any administrative costs I have created.

Finally, I would like to apologise sincerely for this event.

Yours faithfully,
XX

That works for me. It avoids all the usual pitfalls around short-faring (calling it a mistake etc) and is contrite without being overly self-abasing.

But I'm a novice at this sort of thing so wait for others to chip in.

Agree. It’s also refreshing to read a letter that has some different (and good) wording that has clearly been thought through rather than relying on AI.

I presume they won’t find any other evidence of short ticketing on your account that might suggest a pattern of deliberate fare evasion, as opposed to the one off incident which is implied in the letter?

Thank you for the kind words. I think there is one other incident over my account history, but I do use trains at least twice a week paying the full fare other than this. Based on other threads in this forum the usual advice had been kind of don't ask don't tell, do you think I should mention it?

You're welcome.

Basically, no, don't mention it.
