Delay repay misstep

I will keep this brief.

Me and my partner got a train to pick up a car we bought and we drove it back together.

Our journey there was delayed.

My partner had an accident when we returned and is now on life support and could die. The day she was rushed to hospital, I wanted to claim some ownership of the situation. I submitted the delay repay claim in her name and an additional one for the return ticket we bought just in case. We weren't on this train.

I know it's dumb. I should have got a refund for more money. I wasn't thinking straight.

I did call up and try and cancel it but the guy said he would just see it through if he was me and I buckled as it was being investigated. It was approved.

I've been scared to death of being found out for fraud.

I think I just want to some reassurance. It's so out of character for me and I panicked due to fear of losing my wife.

So sorry to hear about your awful circumstances, I hope your wife is recovering.

I'm sure forum experts will be along soon, but please remember this is a minor matter. You won't go to jail and you are unlikely to get any kind of criminal conviction that will be reported on criminal record checks - in your case it seems likely that the train operating company isn't even aware.

Did you buy a return ticket even though you weren't planning to make a return journey as you were picking up a car at the end of a one-way journey by train?

Thank you. I haven't been myself since she's been on life support (3 weeks)

I bought a return in case the car wasn't up to snuff.

I worry that they will see the return claim as suspicious especially after me phoning to cancel it. I explained about my wife and that I can't be clear on what I inputted. He said to just see what happens and sent an email to his colleagues to expedite it.

Oh my, really sorry to hear that.

I'd suggest not worrying in the slightest about this if the train operating company hasn't contacted you, given the other priorities you must have at the moment.

Thanks. Yeah obviously I'm in bits.

I think this is something tangible I can worry about rather than... You know.

I just worry it'll be flagged as suspicious in the future or something... I dunno

If you didn’t take the train back how did you know a train was late such that you had any basis on which to claim? Or did you look up delayed trains and submit a claim for a train you noticed was late, even though you did not travel on it?

If you get paid money I guess you could simply pay it back with a note to say the claim was made in error.

I did do that, yes. I know I'm dumb. I think I was confused

The money hasn't hit my bank yet so maybe I could phone and refuse it.

Honestly this is absolutely not a priority now nor will it ever be. Put this out of your mind and focus on your partner. Nothing more, nothing less.

It's quite hard to get out out my mind. It's hard to explain.

Thank you. I want it off my conscience though.

If anyone is reading this, the pressure was too much so I called up and said I didn't want it anymore. They agreed

Glad it's been resolved - one thing less on your mind.

They sent through the money today.
I phoned up to ask what happened. They person on the phone said they had emailed to cancelled it. I asked if they would let me send it back in error and they said the amount is too small. I left a note on appeal saying that.

I feel I have done everything I can here to rectify it. Is there any more I can do?

I'm coming rather late to this, but the chances are that the railway will indeed see the amount as too small to worry about.

If you feel that you can't accept the money, then find a suitable charity (which might be railway related, or, given your wife's distressing circumstances, one relevant to that) and donate the money to them. Then drop an email to the railway explaining what you have done so that you know that they know you have not enriched yourself through this.

Thank you I have donated the money to the Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospitals trust.

I submitted an appeal this morning, using the text box to detail the sequences so far (that I tried to return money etc.) so I had a written record as all my correspondence was through voice so far. But I have spent today worrying that that's suspicious and that it'll drag on. I do think they'll just reject the appeal next week as I'm not asking for more money and it's a bit weird.

I can't seem to do right for wrong at the minute. I've really lost my head since my partner became so unwell. Doh!

Most people in your situation would be in this frame of mind. Please try to move on. Your partner needs you -- I have been where you are and it may be worth a trip to your GP to find some short-term anti-anxiety assistance while you get to grips with the situation.

The maxim I was told was you can't look after others unless you look after yourself as well. This can take many forms but this is so, so far from what you need to be focusing on and so, so unlikely to have major repercussions even if it is followed up that you need to feel that it is behind you. People will probably fully understand what you're going through and make allowances -- but you also need to allow yourself this same grace.

I hope and pray that the situation with your partner works itself out. I lost my husband eventually but not without a fight and I feel that I was there to handle things successfully because I looked after myself as well. I miss him terribly but can at least feel that I stepped up and took charge when it mattered most. Be kind to yourself and forgive yourself -- for your own sake.

Thank you for your kind message and I am truly so sorry for your loss. I know I can't fully understand how it feels to lose your other half but I appreciate you extending that part of you to me. Makes me feel less alone in this.

I will consider your advice as I think you are right. I am struggling to look after myself
And maybe I should reach out for assistance.

Again thank you. I do appreciate it.
