Wigan to Aberdeen

Hi,

I want to go to/from Aberdeen at Easter. I've no railcards. I've had a look at Advance prices for next month as I couldn't see tickets in April available yet so I'm basing my best current price on a £40 Advance going and £80 Advance returning later in the week.

Is there any tips for a cheaper ticket to/from Aberdeen?

PS: I'm going to Shetland/Orkney so is there a SailRail on Northlink? Also what is the bus fare between Aberdeen centre and the Airport? Dyce station looks to be the wrong side of the airport.

There are SailRail fares available, but from Lockerbie and north but not Carlisle, so I'd suggest splitting at Edinburgh (slightly cheaper than Glasgow as well as not needing to change between stations). Anytime day singles are slightly over half the price of anytime returns but significantly more than half the cost of off-peak returns, which is something to consider if you're doing a triangular Aberdeen – Lerwick – Kirkwall – Aberdeen journey.

Advances from Bolton and Manchester Piccadilly routed TPE + Connections (specifically onto LNER from Edinburgh to Aberdeen) can be good value if you get in early enough.

There are only 3 or 4 LNER services a day to Aberdeen, so that limits the timings.

Also what is the bus fare between Aberdeen centre and the Airport? Dyce station looks to be the wrong side of the airport.

The 727 bus is around £4 single. It departs from Union Square which is integrated with the rail station and a 5 minute walk to the Northlink ferry terminal (bus does call at the ferry terminal twice a day). Frequent service and takes around 30 minutes to the airport.

The station was on the "right" side of the airport until they built the new terminal on the other side in 1977. Dyce station was closed until 1984 though!

My plan is a Monday 0850 flight Aberdeen to Kirkwall and overnight there then:
Tuesday 1140 flight to Sumburgh and sightsee in the afternoon until the 1900 sailing back to Aberdeen
OR
One extra day in Orkney and a flight on Wednesday 0810 to Sumburgh, spending the day sightseeing until the 17.30 sailing back to Aberdeen.

Highly likely to do the latter as there's a few more things in Orkney I wish to see whereas the things in Shetland I wish to see are mainly in Lerwick.

I too was shocked by the prices given I'm more of a Ryanair budget traveller however I'm telling myself it's a one-off.
