It's now looking likely that the last surviving NIR 80 class DEMU has run in service for the last time. It has been failing almost daily for weeks, but suffered a major blow up the week before last. Power car 90 has been removed from the set and dumped in a siding at York Road depot in Belfast.

I sincerely hope this turns out not to be the case, but I don't hold out much hope. After my last visit to NI on 5th April, I changed my avatar to a shot of 90's 4SRKT engine, saying I would change it back to the 70 class shot when the 80 finally bowed out. I've now seen fit to change it back :(

I've spent much of my life around these wonderful trains, so to make us smile and remind us of happier times, I've compiled a few of my shots of them for you all to enjoy. They give a representative sample of liveries down the years. R.I.P.

1) Sometime in August 1985 96 (still in the original and IMHO the best livery) brings up the rear of a Belfast York Road > Larne Harbour working leaving Downshire. The trailers are in the 1980s red and grey livery.

2) On 3rd March 1991 Inter City liveried 99 rests at Portrush after arriving on the 10:10 (FO) from Belfast Central.

3) Also on 3rd March 1991, Suburban liveried DTS 735 waits to depart Lisburn with the 14:40 [London]Derry > Belfast Central.

4) Many, many years later and after a peronal absence of about 10 years from Northern Ireland, it was good to catch up again on 14th May 2008. 69 carrying early Translink livery rolls into Downshire on an afternoon working to Belfast Central. Vestibule veg enjoying the experience!

5) On my last ever day with an 80 class on 5th April 2011, a filthy and failed 94 stands at Belfast Central after arriving with the 10:57 ex-Larne Harbour. A couple of minutes later she exploded back into life to work the 12:12 to Carrickfergus, to my considerable relief.

It's sad that the sound of a EE 4SRKT is dying out in N.I. Still no word on one going to Downpatrick, despite the interest :-x

Very sad to see them go.
Possibly my favourite ever class of train- spent many a happy day out on them, as well as commuting Bangor-Bridge End daily.
Haven't been back since 2007- was hoping to catch a last trip on one this year, but haven't been able to get over, and now it looks like I've missed out.

This just makes it all the more urgent to get some 450 class action before it really is too late. I keep saying I've had my NIR DEMU farewell, but I just can't stop going back for one last go. Hopefully I'll make it over sometime in the summer, otherwise I've got the wife to agree to me going on the RPSI Cork tour on 9th September, so if all else fails I'll go over to that via Belfast.

Having seen the state it's in it is no consolation whatsoever. I prefer to remember it as in the second picture in my little gallery upthread.

That and id rather see it running under its own power! Surley, with the amount of southern region 3rd rail stock scrapped everywhere, that theres still the odd motor bogies stored somewhere...

And surely they'd be ideal for various preserved railways over here...otmr fitted, aws fitted, CDL Fitted - Just sort the bogies out, sort out (the expensive part, limited Network rail running) and thus youve got an ideal peice of rolling stock for lines like Swanage - Worgot to Wareham, East Lancs to Castleton etc...But of course, sadly i doubt itll never happen...

Yeah I don’t think it would be particularly difficult to run an 80 class over here. The biggest initial cost I suspect would be shipping it over from NI. I presume the bogies on the trailer vehicles are just standard B4s set for 5’ 3” gauge? Should be easy enough to re-gauge them for our narrower gauge. Then you just need to get hold of a power bogie from one of the British thumpers: Plenty of those seem to have entered preservation and surely they haven’t all been lovingly restored yet.

The trailer bogies are indeed just B4s, and the power car bogies while not the same as SR thumpers, they are almost identical to those on a class 73.

Shame. Me and the missus were planning to visit Belfast, during our holiday in Ireland next week, to sample the last of the 80s before they finished

450 class still definitely worth a go if you're in NI anyway.

It is true. 69 and 94 worked the 16:12 Belfast Central and 17:15 return yesterday, the last two moves of a diagram normally containing 12.

Even if I apply all of my available brain power I cannot imagine in a million years my 'good lady' agreeing to go bashing, especially in some dilapidated old mk II that's falling apart and smells like a canal barge, powered by something that's likely to blow up at any minute!

She loves a good thrashy engine - she's a big 37 fan - and was keen to get a ride on an 80 class before they went after seeing some You Tube videos of them and the 450s :D

Bad news...

69 & 94 failed at Belfast Central this morning , with some form of bogie issue - which it's transpired is a severe flat tyre. The NIR man I spoke to told me they also failed yesterday, but were revived by mid-afternoon. We didn't see them at York Road (only 90 on the scrapline and 97), so I'm guessing they're inside being worked on. I'm not optimistic that they'll be back this time, though :(

Is there any word on the 80 class pair or are my assumptions that it's game over correct?
