I noticed on the signal map that trains were at a stand at various points between Motherwell and Glasgow Central.

My train I'm currently on cross-border seems to have been the last one to pass through the affected area. Anyone know whats up?

Whoops, apologies, saw 1S39 sat still at a red automatic signal with nothing in front, assumed that was the culprit. I’ll check harder next time!
Easily done, I believe 1Y77 has been dragged away from the scene of the incident and looks like the rescue loco or unit is running round it, presumably to drag it away to the depot or a siding to be parked up.

OHL damage is about 250 metres east of Newton station on the WCML fast lines according to this picture. Atleast the Hamilton line through the station will be open to diversions till this is fixed. There is also a Network Rail helicopter inspecting the area.

It's still in situ. The rescue unit was a DMU for evac of passengers. Will probably be dragged away after close of service by another 6 car DMU.
There's also damage are the polmadie area according to their socials.

What’s Avanti’s rationale for this? Transpennine has provisions in place to facilitate divert but Avanti cannot/will not?

The problem is Avanti can't divert via Whifflet due to clearance problems with the 390 IIRC, therefore only TPE can. I also reckon the crew displacement / stock being trapped north has caused a ripple effect.

For example the last FOUR Preston to Glasgow trains are cancelled I think. Only option is Edinburgh and across.

A few ran via Hamilton Central and Holytown. Why can’t everything do this?

I know this is the standard response but Preston is about 175 miles from the incident. Farcical how they are allowed to do this.

Wonder where the 390's are going from Preston after detraining.. Would be even more amusing if they went back up to Polmadie

Is it more to do with crew changes there than anything else?
Route knowledge.

Certainly 1S69 was terminated at Preston because the booked driver didn't sign the diversion; 1M20 back was cancelled directly as a result.

Some of the other cancellations may have been for the same reason.

Newton to Burnside was not available from early evening due to a block to repair the overheads

I was on 1S74 16:12 Liverpool Lime Street to Glasgow Central throughout, with in a rare occurrence for me a seat reservation. This is TPE’s route retention via Holytown, Whifflet and Carmyle, so actually ran as booked, with incredible levels of overcrowding from Preston as an entire cancelled Pendolino worth of passengers boarded in addition to an already heavy loading from Lime Street.

Only a few minutes late being put behind 1S75 16:21 Manchester Piccadilly - Edinburgh, but didn’t miss the connection at Oxenholme and only 1 other TPE service made it through via Whifflet for the night, 1S81 17:04 Manchester Airport to Glasgow Central.

Avanti was already running a reduced service with 1tph to Glasgow Central diverted via Castlefield due to the Crewe blockade, which didn’t help things. Overall a very good choice of service from me having booked it on 18 October for tonight.
