“Review of the year 2024” - oh no, it’s started already.
Media can’t fill their column inches without this junk which simply tells us what we know already.
26 December is one of my favourite days already, but 1 January runs a close second.
But then we just get holiday adverts don’t we?

Indeed. Always reckon that columnists/journos churn this stuff out so that they then don't have to file any copy whatsoever during the latter half of December.

Serving suggestions on the front of food packaging.
Typical "serving suggestion" optimistically thinks it'll feed as many as Jesus achieved with the bread and fish.

Food makers. Come and spend a day with my family -
A 22 year old son with monumental metabolism;
My 6' 6" frame and appetite to match;
Even my diminutive wife needs more than the "suggested" gnat-portions.

Iirc they use tiny portion sizes to artificially deflate the listed calorie, fat, and salt values "per portion".

Once saw a serving suggestion on a tin of baked beans which showed just a plate with a spoonful of beans. Good bit of imagination from the design team…!!
Value beans, possibly? The design teams tend not to go overboard with the packaging design for basic stuff that's not being sold for all that much. No added value!

The problem with the cheap stuff is the time wasted looking for the beans in all the orange slop!

A few times I've also seen "portion sizes" quoted where it's not possible to divide the full pack evenly into said portions, e.g. something which weighs 500 grams but where one portion is 150 grams.

People who confuse breaks and brakes...

Same letters, I know. Still not an excuse!

YouTube have launched another attack on Adblockers within the last hour or so.
This was the last place it was mentioned and I don't think it has its own thread, but the message certainly irritated me until I realised a way around it.
It looks like you may be using an ad blocker. Video playback is blocked unless YouTube is allowlisted or the ad blocker is disabled. Ads allow YouTube to be used by billions worldwide. You can go ad-free with YouTube Premium, and creators can still get paid from your subscription.
I've found that while the main youtube.com site is affected, m.youtube.com is not, so watching on phone (firefox+Ublock Origin) works, as well as using https://m.youtube.com/?persist_app=1&app=m to force youtube/your browser to not send you back to the desktop version.

In the past the Ublock team have been very fast to implement a fix, it may well be working fine tomorrow morning.

Of course if everyone used adblockers then either YouTube would be a paid for service or (more likely) would shut down.

I really have no problem with YouTube ads. As they say, the only compulsory things in life are tax & death, everything else you have a choice. If you don’t like YouTube ads then either pay a subscription or don’t watch YouTube.

But so many YouTube ads are way too long and impossible to skip. Also they so often break up the video in inappropriate places.

And the "Quiz of the Year".
I can't remember what happened last week never mind last January

It always puzzles me why advertisers pay web sites to irritate me and put me off the advertised product

Problem is that Google doesn't offer a subscription to just Youtube, you have to buy it bundled with their spotify style music service.

I wouldn’t ban the Daily Mail and Daily Express et al, but I’d force the owners to give half their profits to refugee charities.

Christmas television programmes which are obviously filmed in the middle of summer.

For example, BBC ‘Bargain Hunt’ (don’t judge me, I was having my lunch).
A Christmas edition where the contestants & ‘experts’ were going around a car boot sale dressed in Christmas jumper & hat etc.

This would have been ok, if the weather was ‘winterish’ but it was a glorious day, trees in full bloom, and crowds walking around in shorts & tee-shirts.

Difficult with earthly budgets to arrange a wintry day in the summer, especially the same day.

Also, TV production companies like to have the footage "in the can", well ahead of the likely broadcasting date.

They had already fixed it by this morning, YouTube successfully inconvenienced people for a couple hours (for most of which I was asleep).

Yes maybe, but surely you don’t have people dressed in Christmas Santa gear in he middle of July! With the production skills of the BBC I’d of thought this could be worked better.

Maybe you do if it's a Christmas-themed episode which is intended to be aired around this time of the year.

Why people have to stand so close to an airport luggage carousel, then look at the label on half a dozen different bags before their bag finally comes and they lift it off but then stand there with the bag awaiting their other half’s bag.

Is it really so difficult to stand back behind the line?

Perhaps if they kept to a 10-15 sec and before each video, and none during, people like me wouldn't use adblock. However that's PC only and I can't block the YT app on the TV.

Also, there are so many ads by an online spectacles firm that they will never get my business again.

Delivery companies doorstep photographs.
These are the ones which the courier takes to show they have delivered the package to your door.

If Facebook is anything to go by these are pretty pointless. The number of posts showing a blurred image which could really be almost anything, where the poster asks if anyone recognises a doorstep or bit of concrete which isn’t theirs, but shows a parcel which they think is theirs.

Are these photographs just a get-out for the delivery company?
“Well we did deliver it, look you’ve got the picture proof….”

My wife ordered something online to be delivered to her mother's address a couple of weeks ago. The proof of delivery image was a close up shot of the wheelie bin they'd deposited it in but with no visible background and without including the house number sticker in the picture. It could have been literally anyone's bin.
