I think the railway attracts people for many reasons. There seems to be a large (but shrinking) fanbase for those who love all things steam. A decent backing for locos and loco hauled and a lot of interest in what I'd consider modern - Sprinters, Pacers, and 21st century stock.
I always feel like an outlier in railway circles. My railway journey started during Sprinterisation. You could say I grew up on Pacers and Sprinters, but I have no love for them. I didn't get excited about them in 1988 and I still find them dull and clinical now. I was enthralled by first gen DMUs though as a young child and I still miss them now. Although I do very much enjoy the process of travelling by train itself (i.e. the journey), I have no interest in what stock turns up. I haven't had since the 101s went.
I'd say the modern rail scene has a much stronger following than the early to mid eighties ever had.
