This week I failed an assessment centre with Southeastern (25th November) . If I get through this sift is it possible to go to a southern assessment centre day even before the 6month time has elapsed?

Also is the 2 fail limit with train driving per operating company or for all the operating companies ? Thanks

Southeasterns application for myself was done via the southeastern website , not GTR like southern

The 2 fail limit applies to all Toc/Focs.
As it stands applicants are only permitted to fail the psychometric tests on two occasions.
Details are recorded on the OPC database

Is this 2 occasions for life e.g. sit the test and fail both means forget being a driver for life?

That is correct and includes the MMI interview too (hope don't mind me jumping in)

I have heard it maybe changed to 3 attempts in the future but thats not a definite.

I need to add if one fails it to National standard. If one fails it to enhanced standard then they can take their results to another TOC that accepts national

It also need mentioning that it’s 2 fails on the same element if the assessment! Fail the dots twice then it’s all over! Fail the dots then fail the fault finder and you still have a go at each again!

Further to this they do occasionally change the criteria for the assessment and that then resets your fails back to 0! We’ve recently had someone who failed 2 times back in 2009 and 2011 that now drives as he was unaware of this rule and sent off a speculative email to be told the database shows he’s not had any fails!

If you fail any of the core tests twice its game over, is the fault finder an enhanced or additional test? If so that may still be fine but if it's one of the core tests then doesn't matter which ones you fail twice you are out.

They've amended it in the last few days as you now get an additional try.

Yeah i get that but what I'm saying is it not the same test failed, it's any of them twice or to be 3 times in the future, so could be the dots test, coordination test and mmi for example.

Oh I see then yeah that's correct as it's only the core tests it would be applied to. The additional ones would be the TOC specific ones.

Hi Alandev,

It’s a SJT.

It’s like any SJT in terms of the approach that needs to be taken, just remember safety and customer service and you will be fine.

In regards to if it’s difficult or easy , I think naturally everyone finds these different to each other, but just take your time to read the question and I am sure you will be fine.

Hi Bruce, I have only just seen the updates on this page, thank you. I completed the SJT a week ago and am waiting to hear how it went.

The MiniSCAAT will follow a successful SJT.

Hi Alexrory

If you email the OPC with your details inc. TOC, date and time of assesments they will then arrange a time to call you. This is usually within a couple of weeks from what I remember from my assesment day last year.

I believe they can advise you of what test / tests you did not pass but no indepth feedback on scores etc.

I think prioritising BAME applicants is the wrong word. I can’t recall the exact wording but GTR are not prioritising BAME, they are especially keen to encourage anybody from these groups to apply. Which can only be a good thing. This is very much commonplace in recruitment now, the police are also very vocal to encourage minority representation.

Yes they do full background and medical checks. As with everything else on the railway, be honest and upfront at all times, no matter how small the issue may be. It will all come out eventually so just be upfront with everything.

They don't prioritise. Encouraging applicants from every part of the country no matter what their ethnicity is, is good for the company and broadens the number of applicants that apply.

Ok nice- and could we work through the night (2100-0600) as I do shift work on my current job (cabin crew manager) but rarely nights.

Also RE health I have Chronic Myeloid Leukemia so I have to take one pill a day- would tht be a problem on medical grounds?

You have to go through a medical so put it down and they'll let you know early on I'm sure.

The word you're looking for is 'encouraging' rather than prioritising. All companies need to broaden their reach if they want to attract the best candidates from all backgrounds. It's a good thing.

I appreciate the quote but you might want to re-read back a bit further because I was replying to someone else saying they were “prioritising” BAME, I was saying the same thing as you and I am in complete agreement.
Representation matters. Everywhere.

I know Southeastern is National standard but I think Southern may ask you to do more tests as they are Enhanced standard

GTR are advanced and Southern comes under them so you’d need to possibly resit a couple. Not sure if you’ll have done the driver fault finder with South Eastern either?

I’m not sure as I didn’t have to do it when I did my assessment but I’m sure someone will advise
