Journey involving two TOCs

On Sunday I need to make a journey from Witley, Surrey to Newark.

I’m doing part of the journey with someone else who has a railcard, it’s marginally cheaper for me to pay separately for the Witley to Waterloo segment and then KX to Newark (when I’ll be alone).

My question is - if the SWR train is delayed/cancelled as depressingly it has been often, is there any additional responsibility for LNER to allow me on a later train if I book the whole journey on one ticket, or two separates as above?

If you allow the official connecting time across London you are entitled to be rebooked. Nevertheless, it may be wise to book one or other ticket to include the tube rather than use contactless, so you have clear evidence of the through booking.

I don't think the railcard - presumably a 2Tog? - makes a difference.

It doesn't matter if it's one ticket, or multiple tickets; two or more tickets can be combined and it can still constitute one journey.

However, I strongly advise obtaining a through itinerary covering the entire journey.

Our ticketing site will offer a combination of fares, if it is cheaper to do so, with a through itinerary, which can be used as evidence of your contractual entitlements.

You can book each leg separately, which doesn't reduce your contractual rights, but may increase hassle in the event of a dispute, as you'd be on your own in any argument with the relevant company if you did that. It can also be problematic if trains are retimed, if you have separate bookings.

In your specific case of wanting to take advantage of a discount with an accompanying passenger as far as London, I would do two separate journey searches, and add each to your basket, and pay in one transaction. However, be sure it's a valid through journey before booking each leg. But I wouldn't do this if the saving was only marginal.
