Surprised this hasn't been picked up on here yet.

A guy I used to work with was assaulted at Ilford (Crossrail/Elizabeth line) on Wednesday and was taken to hospital by air ambulance.

The news came through yesterday morning that they were planning to turn off life support, and this was done yesterday evening.

Having worked with him for 7 years, he is the most down to earth and friendly bloke you can imagine. Never got himself in bother like some staff do, was always chill and a pleasure to work with.

Right now there's many more things I would like to say, but shouldn't.

UPDATE: Man dies following Ilford assault

A 61 year old man has sadly died following an incident at Ilford railway station on Wednesday, 4 December.

Officers were called to Ilford railway station at around 8.49pm on 4 December following reports of a serious assault.

Paramedics and London's Air Ambulance also attended, and a man was taken to hospital with serious head injuries.

A man was arrested and subsequently charged with Section 18 GBH, Affray and possession of a prohibited offensive weapon in a private place following the attack.

Following the victim’s death, detectives will make an application to amend the indictment to reflect the change in the victim’s condition.

Ayodele Jamgbadi, of Kingston Road, Ilford, appeared at Highbury Corner Magistrates Court on Friday, 6 December and was remanded in custody and will next appear at Inner London Crown Court on 07/01/25.

Senior Investigating Officer, Detective Chief Inspector Paul Attwell said: “We have specialist family liaison officers supporting the victim’s family and our thoughts remain with them at this incredibly difficult time.

“I would like to reassure the public that this is an isolated incident and a 28 year old man has now been charged and remanded in connection. We are not seeking anyone else.”

Anyone with information is urged to contact British Transport Police on 0800 405040 or text 61016 quoting 699 of 4 December.

It’s absolutely despicable that somebody should go to work and lose their life in such violent circumstances. It was only a few months ago that a couple of staff members were seriously assaulted just a few stops away on this line and now this. Large parts of the rail network are now practically lawless. BTP do their best and of course cannot be everywhere at once but I think they are woefully short of visible officers across the network to act as a deterrence.
Thoughts with this mans family, friends and all my other colleagues at this time.

Dreadful news, hope the perpetrator has been caught. I was singing with London's Transport Choir last night raising money for the Railway Benevolent Fund. I hope they will be supporting this mans family in their time of need.

Just saw a BTP update saying that the 61 year old had passed. Absolutely disgraceful that he went to work to do a public service job and didn't get home safely. RIP.

For what it's worth the alleged assailant is on remand.

Everyone was hopeful for better news but considering they were on life support this was sadly the outcome that was dreaded.

The interaction between the staff member and the assailant was apparently just a few seconds and other staff were in proximity and security were already on the station.

It’s just very sad and tragic that staff are encountering some of the most unwell and dangerous parts of society in their daily jobs and ultimately have lost their life in the process which nobody should ever have to contemplate at work. RIP.

Very sad indeed, and a tragic reminder that behaviour is getting worse and worse.

RIP and I do hope some support is made available through the benevolent fund.

Very sad indeed.

It makes you think twice about challenging people and also makes it easy to see why some guards don't leave the cab at times with the way things going.

Thoughts with family and colleagues.

Now reported on the BBC. A man appears to have been arrested and the assault is being treated as an isolated incident.

I understand that phrase but in another sense it hides the escalation in assaults in all walks of life. Saddening news and condolences to all who knew the victim and in particular his family.

Jorge Ortega, 61, was taken to hospital with serious head injuries after British Transport Police (BTP) officers were called to Ilford station at about 20:50 GMT on Wednesday to reports of a serious assault. He died on Friday.
In a family tribute Mr Ortega was described as "the kindest soul you could have the pleasure of meeting".
Ayodele Jamgbadi, 28, of Kingston Road, Ilford, was charged with grievous bodily harm in connection with the incident.

I work for TFL and am very saddened to hear that one of us was killed while doing their job. From now on, I will not challenge anyone trying to blag a free ride, especially when we are often on our own on busy gate lines.

He had already been charged prior to the death:

Ayodele Jamgbadi, of Kingston Road, Ilford, was arrested and charged with Section 18 GBH, affray, and possession of a prohibited offensive weapon in a private place at Highbury Corner Magistrates' Court on Friday.

The section 18 charge is 'GBH with intent', which can be 'intent to prevent lawful arrest', or more usually 'intent to cause GBH'. The intent required for a charge of murder is 'intent to cause GBH'.

And hopefully the despicable act was caught so clearly on CCTV that the accused has no defence.

Very sad, state of the railways and public areas due to Policing cuts. Only have to see the way people push these gates and tailgate, people have no fear of breaking the law and staff unfortunately are in the firing line if they so much as interfere hence why many don't. This incident especially at hotspot stations without places of safety like Glaps / enough enforcement services will rightly so make staff extremely weary now, this unfortunate death follow the incident at Goodmayes not long ago!

GLAPs were requested way back in 2011 and frequently since, both before and after transfer to TfL, however the requests fell on deaf ears. One manager refused it because "someone might come along with a can of petrol and set it on fire" but that is probably all I can say on the subject.

There was a directly infuriating comment by one senior manager about the fact that the Glaps would make staff lazy.... Completely ignoring the safety side of them.

What are GLAPS?
Gate Line Assistance Points I believe.

Or the ludicrous situation of a station on the Elizabeth Line with a GLAP that staff aren’t allowed to use.

My condolences to the family members. More safety changes are needed both from MTR and more BTP funding as customers’ behaviours worsen.

Indeed.

One thing the Elizabeth Line seems to have a lack of(in addition to a multitude of things) is a more frequent appearance of revenue protection officers. Whilst the East and West have RPOs the COS still doesn't, which is shambolic because it means the already thinly stretched East and West RPOs then cover the COS. As a result there is barely a deterrent against Wronguns. But to not have a proper place of safety at most stations that isn't awkward to use is purely neglect for safety imo.

TSOs don’t cover the COS in this current concession agreement. LU stations may have RCOs on the gatelines but they’re employed by LUL.

In my opinion that's as bad as blocking a fire exit.

It is, however staff (currently) don’t sit in them. On the East, gateline staff normally position by the SCU boxes. Place of safety is the messroom.

RMT raised the issue of lone working during the summer. MTR Elizabeth line: Lone Working

Paps are the platform version, rarely seen outside of places like London Waterloo(Platform Assistance points)

Problem with the messroom being a place of safety like other places of apparent safety is that the Staff member often has to fiddle with keys which often in places takes two or more inserts before getting the lock to move. By that time an assailant is on you.

With the TSO part do you mean the new GTS concession or the MTR one? I used to see East and West TSOs at Woolwich and Abbey Wood elizabeth line stations, more so Abbey Wood when they'd do a full block with Southeastern Revenue teams
