I was under the impression that yards with multiple pilot engines involve simultaneous working in separate parts of the facility rather than doubling-up for the purpose of tractive effort.
I don't think I've ever seen two shunters working together on one rake of wagons unless you count class 13.
If there are too many wagons for an 08 to shunt at once it would almost always be more efficient for to split into two rakes and shunt them separately, either sequentially with one shunter, or in parallel with two if available.
The best example of the latter were the train ferries at Dover, which needed careful co-ordination to load or unload both tracks at once to avoid the ship listing.

I have. Pairs of class 08s working trips from Wath Yard. Also pairs and triples of 03s working off Burry Port.

I well remember triple 03s here at Burry Port! Pairs of 08s I've photographed at several locations such as Tidal Sidings and Abercwmboi, plus at Crewe.

Hello, I’ve just had a look from the Lidl car park at Wolverton and there are 4x 18s parked up - does anyone have IDs please?

18014 and 18015 confirmed at Eastleigh East Yard yesterday (02.10.24) but were not in use: 08511 was shunting the East Yard and 08683 was parked with the two 18s, so there are still two 08s here.

I’ve read there is one at Tunstead works.
Has one reached Bescot yet?

Someone told me the other day that there are three at Sellafield - though may only be platform-end gossip. Anyone know anything bout these?

The Sellafield ones are two CBD80s and a smaller one CB40.

Have the class 18s gone from Eastleigh? I have been past the yard on trains a couple of times (in daylight hours) recently and there was no sign of them.

Dang, that was one of my day trips I had in the pipeline.

It may be to do with the rumour that ASLEF don't like them. Perhaps gone back to Wolverton OR gone to Eastleigh works to be rectified or perhaps just bad luck.

Last i heard the Eastleigh twins had been moved into Eastleigh Works for maintenance. Whether that's just code for storage or mods, I dunno

18003 - Scunthorpe Steel Works
18004 - Wolverton
18005 - Wolverton
18006 - Crewe Basford Hall
18007 - Tunstead
18008 - Wolverton
18009 - Wolverton
18010 - Wolverton
18011 - Wolverton
18012 - Whitemoor
18013 - Wolverton
18014 - Eastleigh
18015 - Eastleigh
It is from last night so probably as up to date as we can get.

I think it has been like this for at least a month. Obviously where exactly within each location can vary - for instance Eastleigh has gone from Eastleigh (East) Yard to Eastleigh Works.

EDIT Other than 18014 & 18015 they are unmoved compared to 01/08/2024.
The website 47s and other Classic Power at Southampton https://www.47soton.co.uk/ reports that 18014 & 18015 were moved into Eastleigh Works in the first week of November. The site has a photo of them dumped in the works yard on 03/12/2024.
I wonder if 18014 & 18015 are still visible from perhaps the road bridge leading to Eastleigh Depot and Works as it goes over the mainline ?.
Answer is probably only on a warm day......

How many shunters does the UK network actually need?

With competition from existing shunters, the class 08-e, it is likely to stay a small market even if the class 18 is a success

Indeed. Until they can persuade the major FOCs to take them then I can’t see their use being widespread.

The main use of class 18 seems to be in the same/similar version for industrial use. I wonder how they are doing there ?.

I cannot help thinking the remaining class 08s will go on forever !. There is a drastic reduction in the fleet size from 1,000 (including 09s) but that is due to the loss of most of their work. It will depend on environmental persuasion and a desire to avoid use of the nearest visiting main line locomotive.

Tantalisingly there seems to be very little information on the class 18s.
Has anyone even witnessed them in use ?.

The shunter market also has potential competition from rubber tired vehicles that can generate lots of tractive effort with much less weight, and often road-railers.

Very true and these can no doubt go off for repairs more easily on a lorry a trailer than a heavy rail vehicle can.

You can see them from Campbell Road but as they are at the far end of the sidings bring some binoculars. The rumour I have heard is that the reason Aslef don't like these is that the small fuel tank is next to the drivers entrance.

The photo in the link shows them inside the Works?
