Sunbury to Sudbury - got that one from a rather deaf ticket clerk years ago before TVMs who mistook one for the other when ordering a ticket

A rhyme only counts if the final stressed syllable, and any following unstressed ones, also rhyme. Or so it seems to me. Hence Chester and Leicester rhyme, and Nottingham and Mottingham, but not Southampton and Brighton. or Ilkley and Keighley.

It's taken me a while but I've finally thought of a pair which are even further apart - Pinhoe to Thurso
Only in post announcement speak not local way of saying it. Suppose could also do Prudhoe and Thurso! Though again different in local

Earley to Shirley.
As an aside, being a former local, we had a good selection of different "Earleys".

Earley - The district where I lived and the railway station (which was a long way from my house, Reading was much more convenient).
Erleigh Court Gardens - The road where I lived
Maiden Erlegh - The school I attended.
Early - What you were supposed to be at school, which was pretty strict for a comprehensive. :)

As you can imagine, letters came addressed with a fairly random assortment of the different spellings.

As a current local and former employee of Berkshire Healthcare Foundation Trust, 25 Erleigh Road was seared into my brain by the time I left their employ in 2021.

Anyway, another journey requiring a TARDIS is New Malden to Saffron Walden.

....iffe rhymes with ....with? Sorry, can't see it myself. What do others think?
It does in rhyme certain pronunciations. Saying the "-wyth" in Aber as "-wiff" would be fairly normal in the non-posh areas of my original home town. It almost works for me but my accent hovers half-way between the "with" part of town and the "wiff" part". :)

I'd also note that for a stand-alone "with" the non-posh version would be "wiv" not "wiff".

Agreed. It has a certain cadence to it that's not a million miles away from a rhyme. A lot of us have gone a bit off-piste with that over the past 7 pages.

Anyway, I'm hoping Horwich to Norwich is ok.

In Germany I once travelled from Bamberg to Amberg. Both towns had a considerable number of breweries within their boundaries. At least nine each.
