Jordy the old bridge has a preservation order on it so it has to remain open and maintained it cannot be demolished.

Anyone know whats happening to the old bridge? Glad the new one is opening anyway, I'm moving back home tomorrow so I'll have to go and have a look!

Jordy, can you tell me what the reason was for the delay in granting planning permission for this. I am not from this area, but the First TPE from Manchester Airport to Cleethorpes that we have used three times this year goes through this station, which seems quite busy.

I'm not entirely sure to be honest, but (and this is a complete guess!) I wonder if the council kicked up a fuss about the style of bridge, that would explain why it looks so "retro" compared to the usual new bridges!

Basically, the line is crap, although it isn't 55mph all the way. Between Grimsby Town and Barnetby, the line speed is 60mph, although from Habrough Jn to Barnetby East, the line is certified for 90mph running, and has been for quite a few years. For whatever reason though, everything is limited to 60mph.

Wrawby Jn - Thorne Jn is 55mph all the way, apart from a brief 25/40 PSR over Keadby Swing Bridge.

Thorne Jn - Hatfield Colliery is 60mph, after this though, it different depending on what direction your travelling ....

To Doncaster. 85mph Hatfield Colliery - Bentley Jn. 60 mph Bentley Jn - Marshgate Jn. 25 mph Marshgate Jn into Doncaster station.

From Doncaster. 25mph Station - Marshgate Jn. 80mph Marshgate Jn - Hatfield Colliery.

At the moment (and has been in place for quite a few years now), Appleby level crossing to Scunthorpe is under a 30/40 TSR for just over 4 miles on the Down line. The Up line (Scunthorpe - Barnetby) is unaffected. This obviously slows trains down by a couple of minutes. The line from Wrawby Junction to Thorne Junction would need many millions of pounds spent on it to increase the line speed to anything worthwhile (I.E 75mph). I reckon 60mph is possible currently, but it's not worth implementing, since it will only save a minute at best.

The other option is for TPE to run services via Gainsborough Central, as this was the main line at one point, and given a clear run, can be just as quick, if not quicker, to Doncaster. Can't see TPE doing this myself, as Scunthorpe will be missed out.

And get rid of those weeds. Have they no shame?

Here's my picture in happier times with a Tractor on one of the best bashes - 02.10 Manchester Piccadilly to Cleethorpes via Retford Low Level. 5 hours 20 minutes of bliss!

Memories......

I never managed a 37 on the 02:10 - It was always a 31 when I did the train.

Best 02:10 story I heard was a friend of mine got on the 02:10 at Retford, went to sleep and woke up near Grimsby - sadly his coach had developed a fault and was shunted off the train at Lincoln - he was actually in the DMU depot at Lincoln !! and never did find out the number of the 03 shunter which removed him to the shed..

Not entirely so.

Work started prior to planning permission being granted and condition 2 of the original planning application was not discharged, again, prior to building work starting.

That TSR came about when a loaded coal train derailed and ripped up a load of track, which had to be replaced. Why it has never been removed, I've no idea. It's the same as the 30/55 TSR over Keadby Bridge in both directions. That's been in place for as long as I can remember. Surely it must be a contender for the longest running TSR in the country by now ....

Possibly due to ongoing drainage issues in that area I should imagine? That patricular area is very wet and that was also the reason for the track twist which caused the derailment.

I should imagine that there drainage issues on adjacent land. Given NR's propensity for not being concerned about what happens around and below their own infrastructure when it affects others, I cant really see them being overly energetic about a difficult job such as getting adjacent landowners to sort out drainage issues away from railway land.

I've heard that the case with Appleby Bank now is more to do with the condition of the trackbed (drainage as has been said) rather than the coal train derailment. The track will be well bedded in by now! Keadby Bridge is only 30/55 in the Down direction (towards Doncaster). The Up (towards Scunthorpe is 40/55, so slightly better. Obviously no different for a passenger train, though. It could end up with a blockade to sort out Appleby Bank (like with Medge Hall in 2009) in a few year's time.

I was on that relay following the derailment.
As work progressed replacing the wrecked section it was found that the trackbed was riddled with wet beds nearly all the way back to Appleby crossing.
Situation not helped by standing water in ponds alongside the track.
Drainage was there but had not been cleaned out in years.
