Great Northern Fleet - 379s introduction

In this fortnight’s Rail it says all 379s are now on lease. Early morning and evening Letchworths will see them first then they will release 387s which can run dual voltage services. The exGWR 387s are staying on GN. (Rail 1023 November 27th P19)

In an attempt to try and tidy things up, there’s a new thread below to discuss some of the movements.

Planned 387 and 377 cascades to Southern and Southeastern in 2025

Hi everyone. We’ve been told that 13 class 377s will be coming over to SE shortly, this is to replace more networkers. I guess they’re to replace 465s on some of the Ashford/gillingham runs? Would 52 coaches be enough to replace the remaining 465/9 fleet? And some 2 cars?

Close... the ex GWR ones, on the last plan, are due South.

See there’s at least one short-formed GN 387 diagram floating around on GN today. Clearly the squeeze on the fleet is starting to make its presence felt.

GTR have now admitted that the class 379 introduction is delayed, although they claim that the December timetable doesn't need them.

Confirmed that plans to introduce Class 379s onto @GNRailUK services this month have been delayed. GTR points out that the timetable was never contingent on their introduction.

The timetable is, kind of, contingent on their introduction as the 387 fleet is already being stretched, as for that matter are the 700s. So it isn’t entirely clear how they intend to reliably deliver eight extra diagrams, as well as run what they already do.

If the 379s don’t materialise next week then we can likely expect some shortforms.

8 extra diagrams? There are a few tweaks to the Class 700 diagrams elsewhere which mean the "cost" is 2 extra diagrams despite covering the extra peak services.

One of those is the Cambridge to Kings Cross early morning service which works a Welwyn to Sevenoaks service and vice versa in the evening already picked up elsewhere.

There are a handful of morning peak services strengthened from 8 to 12 car which free up another 8-car 700 - the 12-car diagram in question is currently only used in the evening peak anyway so this is a neutral change.

Then the 2 additional peak diagrams which will only be 8 car 700 for a few weeks... Sure it tightens availability of the fleet in the interim but late arrival of 379s has been factored in.

Do we know if there will be any interior work done. They must be full of mold .

We do not want another 458 first class situation

The problem with the 458s is that the windows leak. Hopefully not the same issue with the 379s.

They can step up to work with one less 700 for the Sevenoaks, but it will cause a delay at WGC because the incoming train doesn't go into the yard for 40-45 minutes and simply remains on the platform to become the next service (thus a platform is blocked until it departs, so the through Cambridge is impacted by 5 minutes or so).

I was told only one 379 was going to run in December so the delay isn't really that significant and suggests there's still a fair bit of work to be done.

Off the top of my head, I'd have said that set is synonymous with multiple unit, and is a number of carriages in a semi-permanent configuration, bearing a set number. Sets are usually independently powered, either by electric (25kV ac / 750v dc / battery) and/or diesel engines, although some have been unpowered (eg 3/4 TC sets on the southern, and their derivatives, and more recently TPE's Mk5 formations).
Whereas I'd have said that a 'rake' is the vehicles comprising a whole train, and as such may comprise several sets, or a number of unpowered carriages, or, in times gone, by a mixture of sets and unpowered vehicles (eg dmu sets plus a parcels wagon or two).
