So today I went to see a new WTT movement of the Caledonian sleeper which goes from Inverness to aberdeen on Saturday and back to Inverness on Sunday, I expected it to maybe a be a swap of some sort but no. It was the exact same Inverness consist coming back on the Sunday.
Does anyone know why the purpose of this move is?

I don't know but was there lack of capacity in Inverness for servicing this weekend because of the Highland Main Line engineering work?
I’m not sure, that is possible but it’s also planned to run each weekend which is odd, although it could just be easier for servicing in Aberdeen

Could also be driver route refreshing if there are a series of diversions coming up.

There is a (ScotRail) shore supply in Inverness, but CS aren’t able to use it - more due to politics than practicalities I believe.

Last couple of winters CS have had the Mk3 (ex-Nightstar) generator coach on hire from ERS in the yard at Inverness to provide stock heating over the weekend if temperatures dropped too low.

This year the solution is to have the option of running the stock over to Aberdeen to put it on the shore supply there.

The paths and crews are planned in each weekend, but will only be used depending on the weather / temperatures forecast in Inverness.

So that’s the point of these CS moves… thread answered!

Thank you, this was really helpful and also helped me figure out when it will be running, guessing it won’t run over the summer then

The CS set stables on the MotorRail sidings in In Inverness where the shore supply is not compatible with the CS stock.

Just to add to this, Eastern Rail Services Generator Van 96371 has since moved back to Yarmouth so isn’t easily at hand as a backup.

What politics are involved? They’re both run by the Scottish OLR who surely should slam heads together

Aberdeen Clayhills is LNER operated so presumably Cally Sleeper (Scottish Gov) are paying LNER (UK Gov) for the extra stabling/shore supply usage and additional track access charges to Network Rail (UK Gov) for the ECS moves? There's some politics for you .
