I am asking this question as I am away from my computer and cannot check the various bits of information needed.

Is the ticket below valid for travelling via either Lincoln or Gainsborough?

Would you walk between Lea road and Central? Mileage wise they are about the same but I don't think a route planner would give you the route because it would try and double you back at Retford, if you ask for not Retford it would give you via Lincoln.

Saxilby is a related station to Barnebty, amongst others.
http://www.atoc.org/clientfiles/File/routeing_point_identifier.pdf page 52.

Therefore:
"If the origin and destination have a common routeing point, the permitted
route is direct via the shortest distance from the origin to the destination
over which a regular scheduled passenger train service operates. No doubling
back (passing through the same station twice on a single journey) is allowed
which may require customers to change trains short of the routeing point,
unless an easement allows a longer alternative route."
http://www.atoc.org/clientfiles/File/RSPDocuments/instructions.pdf

Relevent mileages are:
Saxilby-Doncaster 30.75
Doncaster-Barnetby 34.5
Total 65.25

Saxilby-Lincoln 6
Lincoln-Barnetby 29.25
Total 35.25

Saxilby-Gainsborough Lea Road 9.5
Gainsborough Central-Barnetby No mileage stated in the NRT.
Total ?

Therefore, I conlcude that the only valid route is via Lincoln.

20 miles, 14 chains according to Quail. Which makes it the shortest route, but as it isn't shown in the NRT, possibly technically invalid. It makes Lincoln valid on a technicality I'm sure, but whether Brigg is a valid route I'm not so sure. I'm sure in practice it would be accepted on either route.

Maybe to be safe split the ticket at Gaisborough. I doubt anyone has tried to be honest, the walk across Gainsborough will put most off and route Lincoln will always be quicker.

No I don't mind. I'm actually doing East Midlands Round Robin tomorrow so I can use that for Retford - Gainsborough Central.

Gainsborough Central-Barnetby No mileage stated in the NRT.

Yes I noticed that, however I don't have anything else to hand to be able to check mileage hence the question.

Therefore, I conlcude that the only valid route is via Lincoln.

Surely this is an oversight rather than anything else when the timetable is compiled. A route can't be invalid just because someone forgot to put the details in.

The ticket from Gainsborough Central is more expensive on its own.

Cheers for the help.

I agree it is an oversight, but that is how the shortest route is calculated. As I say, I suspect in practice it would be accepted.
