The 2348 from Streatham to Bedford normally runs from Sutton via Wimbledon https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/service/gb-nr:G50086/2024-11-08

However it's this week running non-stop from Sutton to Streatham via Mitcham Junction https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/service/gb-nr:X26492/2024-11-11/detailed

It thus arrived 10 minutes early into Streatham, at 2337 instead of 2347

The East Croydon to London Bridge stopping service meanwhile is supposed to arrive at 2342, allowing passengers from that line to change onto Thameslink.

Both trains continue to Tulse Hill, but this time on different platforms, before going in different directions. (Tulse Hill has 4 platforms, Streatham 2)

Obviously the early arrival of the Bedford service on the same platform meant the LBG service was delayed into Streatham, and passengers could not change onto said last Bedford train, because it had left. https://www.realtimetrains.co.uk/service/gb-nr:P87504/2024-11-11/detailed It also didn't wait at Tulse Hill.

This seems a bit unnecessary. Is there not any signalling procedure to hold the fast-running train so it doesn't arrive ahead of the train timetabled before it?

...or they could hold it at Tulse Hill ( although that would scupper the same platform connection )?

It's called holding a signal at danger, but probably requires an alert signaller to notice the issue. (Note - the fault may not lie with the signaller.)

Signaller regulation, most likely accidentally allowed the Thameslink in first vice the southern.
