Manchester Central Zone - add on to rail fares inconsistency

I went walking earlier in the week, finishing at Glossop.

Ending my walk, the Northern TVM at Glossop automatically offered me a single which included Metrolink Zone 1 (city centre basically). I had forgotten about this so saved myself £1.40 (for a Zone 1 single).
When I got to Manchester Victoria, I tried both the Metrolink TVM and the Northern TVM. Neither would offer me an outbound ticket to Glossop which included the Zone 1 element. So the following morning I had to buy a Metrolink Zone 1 single plus a £6.40 SDS from Piccadilly to Glossop. BRfares.com says there are no fares available outbound from Manchester so I assume this is correct, but it seems strange to offer the deal one way only.

There are various combinations of bus, tram and train 1-day travelcard but I was travelling at peak times in the morning and possibly in the afternoon.

When travelling from Manchester and starting with a Metrolink journey, through fares are only available from Metrolink TVMs outside of Zone 1.

In the case of Glossop, you would have needed to buy a ticket to Rail Zone 3.

An Anytime Day Single from Moston to Glossop, route "Manchester CTLZ" is available, priced at £7.30. Just start short at Manchester Victoria. Saves you 50p.

Alternatively, if the ticket you have has been issued is from Manchester Stns to Glossop, it's possible to take the 0840 TPE train from Manchester Victoria direct to Manchester Piccadilly, or any combination of Northern trains and then changing at Salford Crescent.

Yes, when I read up the details I found the Rail Zones table etc but couldn't decide if it really meant all zones other than Zone 1 or whether I was missing something in my understanding.

I didn't look up other stations such as Moston, but I did look at the train from Victoria to Piccadilly but the onward connections weren't good. I wanted to get on with things to make an infrequent bus later in the day. When travelling from east of Victoria, with the appropriate times/connections I have travelled via Salford Crescent. I buy tickets which 'join up' at Salford Central.
