As titled, is an off peak single from Exeter SD to Reading valid via Basingstoke?

(Route on ticket is "any permitted")

Related additional question: How about a Exeter to Redhill Off Peak Single with the route restriction "via Reading and Guildford", is it valid via Honiton-Salisbury-Basingstoke-Reading?

On the face of it, no, because the only valid routes via Guildford are
  • GW + AR
  • WE + AR
  • WR + AR
but nothing via Basingstoke.
Put it another way, “PZ + AR“ is not on the list of permitted routes between Exeter and Redhill.

It isn't on a mapped route from Exeter to Redhill, but it's permitted by virtue of the "split route check" - since travelling via Honiton, Salisbury and Basingstoke is a valid route to get to Reading (which is one of the via points on the ticket).

There’s a
HONITON NOT LDN
fare which would be valid that way.

Ah, thank you. I keep forgetting that one!

Good spot. Since that route of fare is cheaper in most scenarios, it is a valid route even without referring to the split route check. The Routeing Guide states you can travel in accordance with cheaper fare routes - so it's not even a question of getting a zero fare excess.

No problem, it isn't always the first thing that comes to mind :)

Where in the routeing guide is the split route check explained?
Page 2 of the Guide refers:
Where the fare specifies a particular route, there will be restrictions in the fare routes data that will affect the routes listed in the Guide which pass through the station shown in the route description. The National Routeing Guide may be used to find out how to reach the station shown in the route description.
