Hi all,

Will be travelling up to Lincoln from London and wish to return via Nottingham.

I’m looking single fares from Lincoln to London Terminals, and it shows the ‘Any permitted’ fare cheaper than the EMR only fare. I thought via Nottingham was a permitted route so I’m a little confused. Is this still the case, and the EMR fare is an anomaly?

In principle it would be, however there is a negative easement 700386 which states:
700386 Customers travelling from Lincoln, Collingham, Swinderby, Hykeham, Newark Castle, Newark Northgate and Rolleston to London Kings Cross or London St Pancras in possession of tickets routed "Any Permitted" or "via Retford" may not travel via Nottingham. This easement applies in both directions.

I believe this was the result of EMR successfully lobbying for what was a long-standing permitted route to be closed down on the alleged basis that it constituted a .loophole'.

Would the loophole's loophole be to book the ticket from Saxilby/Market Rasen?

Another downside of the LNER project, which saw return tickets axed and replaced with single tickets at 55% the price of returns. I presume as a single from London - Lincoln on the LNER priced flow (£49.10) is cheaper than a single for London - Nottingham (£76.70), customers would buy to Lincoln and simply end their journey at Nottingham to save money if they were only wanting a single ticket.

(I've noticed similar with Sheffield with the LNER price fare being routed "Not via Leicester" or "Via Grantham" for the Nottingham–London LNER priced fare, so I'm surprised LNER hasn't changed the route for their London - Lincoln fare to be something like "Via Peterborough")

Except post #2 of this thread says there's a negative easement which prevents any permitted tickets to Lincoln being used via Nottingham

Hard to see why anyone from Newark would opt to go via Nottingham to get to Lindon. The journey time is much longer.

During engineering works it will often be the fastest route. It's also hardly unreasonable - and the whole point of the Routeing Guide was supposed to be that it would codify what was considered to be reasonable. Longstanding permitted routes shouldn't be removed purely for commercial reasons.

From Lincoln the difference in journey time going via Nottingham is also much less, as the direct LNER services are only two-hourly.
