I think it depends on whether you're making an intercity journey or a local one. I think for an intercity journey 15 minutes is fine, but for a local journey you want much closer to departure (but not so close you end up selling tickets that may be unusable) - 5 minutes is probably a reasonable time for that, certainly most would struggle getting from the main concourse at Manchester Piccadilly to 13/14 in less than that.

That might matter in terms of buying tickets, but if I said I was going to London immediately it would refer to getting the next available train whether that be in two minutes or 15 minutes.

Sorry APOD (Advance Purchase on the Day) can be bought at anytime, some TVMs have a 5 min cutoff for the next service though. LNER (London North Eastern Railway) have had tomake quite a few changes to accomadate simpler fares.

Actually no LNER have been doing APOD longer than Northern I believe , just it's become the main ticket type with Simpler Fares

Maybe, but if we assume people can see further ahead of them than the end of their nose, anyone who realises

1. the flexible fares are (to some extent) regulated; and
2. the inflexible Advance fares are completely unregulated; and
3. the LNER Opaque Fares scheme, as well as the widespread removal of off-peak day singles and returns for local journeys on Northern's patch, demonstrate the intention is to withdraw all but the very worst value flexible fares (and probably ultimately to withdraw those as well), at which point the unregulated fares are liable only to continue to be cheaper than the regulated fares used to be for approximately three nanoseconds;

would surely appreciate that it would be better to have a bit of transparency over fares.

It is politically quite difficult to put up regulated fares by more than a few percent a year on average. There are no such constraints on unregulated advance fares because the media can't find out, so can't report, how much the fares have gone up by over time and there's no media-friendly annual round of fare increases.

Post edited, you're quite right, forgive me.

I made an assumption based on the relationship between off-peak singles, off-peak returns and Anytime singles and returns that I'm most familiar with (i.e. the off-peak return is usually about 10p more than the off-peak single, and the Anytime ticket is usually considerably dearer than either). Under those conditions they would have had to abolish off-peak returns along with off-peak singles or people would have taken to buying off-peak returns and discarding the return portion. I can see now that I've looked, however, that things are rather different up north and the Anytime Singles are cheaper than the off-peak returns!
