The usual Class 170 was replaced this morning on the 9:57am from Sheffield by a Class 150 which ran all the way through to Scarborough. The 170 due to run the trip went into Sheffield Station on Platform 8 clearly with a problem.

How many times have Class 150 been used on the Sheffield to Scarborough service?

Not the full route, but the Sunday 08:00ish from Sheffield to Hull stopper service is very often a 150.

I'm old enough to remember 142s doing a full Sheffield - Bridlington and being one of the few to enjoy it!

Although rare these days for a 150 to do Sheffield - Scarborough, it has happened a few times since the 170s came to Northern but nothing is actually diagrammed to be a 150.

Is Scarborough now solely 170s, I remember a few years ago it was 158s, then a mix of them and 170s. About a decade ago it was usually 158s during the week and 153s or 158 x 153 on Sundays

I think it's all booked to be 170s now, but don't be surprised if a 158 does turn up.

I think there's a solitary early-morning working - something like the 08.00 into Scarborough - that is basically an extension of the Bridlington-York local and therefore booked 158, but that may have gone since I last used it a couple of years ago.

I've occasionally heard of 150s being used, but never actually travelled on one.

The York - Hull - Bridlington service is predominantly formed Class 155s, with the odd 158. Rarely, if ever, a 150 these days.

The York - Pontefract Baghill - Sheffield service is almost always a 150, but they're about the only regular 150s in York now, unless a 150 appears on the Leeds - Harrogate - York service.

The 0639 Hull - Scarborough is booked a 155, it is formed off the 0630 arrival from York, at Scarborough it forms the 0815 to York via Hull

Sheffield-Hull-Scarborough are almost all 170s. York-Hull-Bridlington almost all 155. All these units are serviced at Hull BG (170 formally allocated with 155 to follow but are already maintained there). A couple of Hull-York are also 170 to get them onto York-Harrogate-Leeds. A massive change in recent times with the majority of Northern trains operating out of Hull now maintained in the city. Who would have thought that would be the case a few years back. That just usually leaves 158s (As highlighted occasional 150) operating Hull-Doncaster and Hull-Halifax which visit BG but not allocated (Although BG does some exams on these units). Staff numbers at BG have increased threefold.

Regarding 150s last Saturday there was one attached to a 158 on one of the Halifax-Hull workings not to sure how unusual this is as most Hull-Halifax's are either operated with 2 or 3 car 158s.

I've been meaning to take a trip over to York again at some point when time off work allows. What routes are mainly booked as 155s now does anyone know?

The only way Northern's 150's could be made remotely fit for purpose for intensive regional services would be to reform them into 3 carriage units.

Cheers. The last time I went on a 155 was when they were used between Leeds and Manchester Victoria. I also noted that some of the York to Hull trains run fast to Selby via the ECML.

How bad are cancellations on this route now? I ask because when I stayed in Scarborough for a week last year, the 0901 to Sheffield was cancelled every day I was there.

I think 1 of the diagrams is for a 158. While I was on my course in Sheffield, the 0704 arrival at Doncaster which forms the 0712 to Adwick was a 158 every time.

Some still do, if it’s first or last stop Selby it goes via ECML, usually when there’s a Pontefract train then the Hull goes mainline

It's not too common for a 150 to appear on either a York to Bridlington or a Sheffield to Scarborough service (as mentioned, these are usually the booked 155's, sporadic 158's and 170's), but when they do appear, it's usually the 2-car variant. However, on Sunday 13th October, a 3-car variant appeared, as photographed here at Driffield:

On Sundays about half the services to/from Scarborough are various sprinters. Is this to help with drivers and traction knowledge, or do some 170s refuse to work Sundays l?

Due to a 170 failing overnight at BG, Northern are sending 150206 from Leeds which will go onto the 0745 Brid, which then works the 0839 Brid - Sheffield, then 1057 Sheffield - Scarborough, 1402 Scarborough - Sheffield, 1657 Sheffield - Scarborough, 2002 Scarborough - Sheffield and 2256 Sheffield - Hull, until it gets swapped out (a long shot) so these are the trains to avoid today!

The service in bold is cancelled from Hull according to the departure boards at Doncaster, so that might be the set swap.
