And now there are issues between Leeds and York due, apparently, to an unexploded WW2 bomb.

Friend left home at 10am for a Leeds to Kings Cross service. It was terminated at Peterborough, very long wait for taxi to Bedford, onward rail travel. He arrived in Shepherds Bush about an hour ago.

Can anyone explain please, why trains on the Hertford loop can't be turned round at HN instead of Gordon Hill?

Does anyone know what caused the fire. Ie was it started in the trough, or did it start elsewhere and then reach the trough. Reports were about a building near the railway in local media in Herts at the beginning of the incident.

The other question, when are the cancellations for early morning trains likely to be known? I suspect we will have some with trains and crew out of position all over the ECML.

Not sure a third party is involved here unless a steam engine was going past 8-)

The area of the fire is the same spot where in 2022 the overhead lines were damaged by an explosion as a result of someone touching them with an object. The possibility of these two incidents being linked is a bit far fetched but it's an odd coincidence.

Pure speculation I suspect. The nearest building on that side of the railway line is about 50m away. I once worked there.

So do I assume that the fire took out the signalling at HN station - as otherwise it is an easy turnback?
It must of, otherwise they would have turned trains back there.

Possibly reopened now. Did lead to an interesting observation earlier that the 18:57 Leeds to Blackpool North service left Leeds at 20:02, following the 19:57 service which left at 20:00 (both started short at Leeds, vice York)

Yep, was caught up in this. Nothing could leave Leeds to the east. They were sending what they could via Cas but as you can imagine it was a bit of an issue in the middle of the evening peak.

There have been a number of arson attacks in the area recently (cars being set on fire) but I have no idea if those were near to this, but I think arson has at least been considered. I am sure we'll know in the coming days.

Looking out of trains at the cables in the concrete channel I always thought they looked like they were coveted with rubber, or similar, which would burn like billyo

First time since I moved near the ECML and coming home with a code BLACK.....

Jumped over to St Panc for the 4pm train to Leicester and it was bedlam. What was interesting was the amount of LNER staff on the platform. Good to see some sort of a plan.

Lucky to get a seat and then someone pulled the emergency cord just outside London which delayed us further.

They thankfully let us through first as we were running late before the train to Peterborough so I was able to get off and get the train to Peterborough and by the looks of the car park which usually at 6:30pm would be 1/4 full only had about 30 spaces of missing cars so looks like I was very lucky to get home as 1000s were still in London.

Is there any apps available that are good during disruption? None of the normal apps were giving any ideas of other routes only canceled direct trains. I had to look up London to Cambridge to Peterborough or London to Leicester to Peterborough and buy separate tickets. Is there a via route in any app?

If the cable troughing is glass-fibre or plastic, it is that burning which would be the main producer of the heat and flames. Much insulation on modern cables, although plastic, is designed not to burn too readily. ('Low smoke and fume; Zero Halogen' is the usual description.)

Given that nothing else is managing to get past Gordon Hill for passengers, how come 4E97 has managed to come through HN change track twice avoiding Watton at Stone and sail passed P4 at Stevenage.
With 2F33 still stranded in P5 since midday - what am I missing please?

There is no overhead power.
Thanks @Robski
So the issue at HN isn't signals or points but OLE - our old 'single point of failure' nemesis - why can't the OLE be isolated on the N side of HN - i.e. on the far side of a crossover - so that problems in Stevenage don't cripple HN.

Anyone got any ideas how the York to London service is likely to look tomorrow morning? I'm aiming to be travelling around 9am.

Edit: I see LNER are currently saying that they are expecting a normal service but some trains might be cancelled:

Work to repair the damage will be undertaken overnight tonight. Currently, we expect this to be completed and for the morning services to run as scheduled. However, some early morning services may be disrupted depending on the scope of the repairs needed and if the work takes longer to complete than expected.

Please check journey planners or live departure boards as soon as you can tomorrow morning, to ensure your expected train is running.

At 20:30 normal working was granted on both up/down fast lines. Presume work overnight is to deal with slows and Hertford loop.

I would imagine 9am southbound you should be ok, very early services possibly cancelled due to set displacement.

I know the control are trying to deal with tonight but surely with the stock out of place they must have an idea that the can run 2/6 train from Edinburgh (for example) as they only have 4 trains there.
