Hi,

I noticed that today's 9N09 0934 Edinburgh to Newcastle was cancelled due to an apparent 'operational incident'.

Anyone able to elaborate on what has happened and what this means?

Many thanks.

The inbound working for that, formed of 802 206 on the 07.08 Newcastle - Edinburgh, appears to have terminated at Berwick upon Tweed with the following Edinburgh trains somewhat delayed so whatever it was, it happened there.

Inbound working also says cancelled between Berwick and Edinburgh due to issue with train crew

Then a STP was put in for a 5S07 from Cramlington to Newcastle

Operational incident can mean many things.

Driver allegedly going too fast. Missing AWS, doors released wrong side.

Signal reversion.

Despatch irregularities.

Many many reasons that reason is given.
And it would be wrong to state the ‘alledged’ reason on here, incase someone or some people need to be investigated/stood down from duty.

Many thanks for the insight. Just intrigued as to why the station announcement system referred to the cancellation reason as an 'Operational Incident' yet Realtimetrains states it was down to a shortage of staff.

Perhaps the Incident meant the driver was stood down and they don't have a replacement. Although, as you say speculation is not helping anyone.

"Operational Incident" is one of those terms which I think shouldn't be give to the public though. It implies that something interesting has happened making people want to know more but doesn't actually convey any useful information at all.

It would be better to turn the report for public viewing into either "lack of available train crew" if staff have either been taken ill or stood down, "problem with the train" if the unit needs to be withdrawn from service for investigation, or the ubiquitous "signalling problem" for anything ranging from a track circuit failure to a SPAD.

Other operators delayed through Berwick today due to signalling issue so you can pick from many potentials. It’s all conjecture here.

I think that’ll do for this one. Thanks all.
