The issue with VAT on schools is not whether to have it, that's a choice for voters, and they made it. It's the extreme haste with which it is being applied, whereby the full increase in fees is probably going to be due as early as January, but no parent is going to know until the October budget.
The fact it targets those least able to afford it, and will immediately stress state schools because they haven't remotely had time to ensure there are extra places, and this is all being done because Labour were too scared to go to the electorate with a progressive income tax proposal, is just the cherry on top for anyone looking to paint this government as a multitude of very bad things.
It's borderline incompetent at this point. it's definitely torpedoed the claim that Starmer was going to be the Prime Minister for everyone, or that hard working people are his muse. I was genuinely surprised to learn that fees for private secondary education can be as little as £5,000. That's LESS than the government pays state schools to educate a pupil (~£7,000). Incredible.
