A few months ago, my wife and I travelled from Glasgow (GLQ) to Edinburgh, on our way home to Newcastle and were surprised that there were no seat reservations, even for first-class customers. As it was there was plenty of space so it wasn't a problem.

We are not 100% sure yet, we may be traveling to Aberdeen direct from Newcastle on LNER, or slightly earlier via Edinburgh, then on the Scotrail train. We would obviously prefer seats on the right.

That seems to accord with the info contained in the ScotRail webpage linked above, i.e. no reservations available on any of their Glasgow->Edinburgh services.

Yup none there, same with Dundee to Glasgow/Edinburgh and all Fife Services, seems to be longer journeys. I did notice its mostly HSTs I've been on that have reservations, but those tie in with the longer journeys so makes sense.

Seat reservations are not guaranteed on Aberdeens or Inverness services from Edinburgh or Glasgow, if the booked traction is subbed then there wont be any. Like if an HST fails and a 170 is subbed in then there will be no reservations.

Last week an HST failed early doors and a 158 subbed for the diagram all day, including a Glasgow to Aberdeen service. Not ideal but better than a cancellation.
