I'm going on a 7 day ALR, starting on the 23:50 sleeper to Glasgow.

I'll post some updates here at some point, with photos when I get back, but until then, those who are interested can follow me on Twitter.

Thanks guys!

Single to Watford (or wherever the first pick up point after midnight would be)?
If an All Line Rover counts as a season ticket it wouldn't even have to be at a station the train called at, just the first station passed through after midnight.

The briefing pack I was issued with by ScotRail clearly states that is not permitted and the customer should be advised a single to the next station will be issued and payable
Hence when planning my ALR in 2009 I used Falkirk Grahamston (as this is one of the few southbound stations with a departure after 00:00)

So if an ALR can't be used with a single as a season ticket as described above then seeing as Watford is pick-up only the person would in theory have to pay for a Standard Anytime Single to Carlisle at £150.50? Very expensive.

Yes, that is what the briefing pack suggests
However, when I asked in person they couldn't actually answer the question

The example I gave was the Glasgow - Euston sleeper
Showing the ALR on boarding, and a single from Glasgow to Sheildmuir (or Carluke if necessary)
I was advised this was not permitted and a single from Glasgow to either Watford Junction or Euston would have to be purchased

I asked the same question at Glasgow Central (Virgin Trains) and the answer was the same

Surely going northbound it'd be easier to get an earlier train to Watford Junction and board the sleeper there, saves a few potential problems.

I suspect it's because I think that the ALR is treated as a leisure travel pass, therefore the NRCoC mean that you can combine it with a ticket even if the train doesn't call at the station you are combining with.

See:

NRCoC said:
19. Using a combination of tickets
You may use two or more tickets for one journey as long as together they cover the entire
journey and one of the following applies:

(a) they are both Zonal Tickets (unless special conditions prohibit their use);
(b) the train you are in calls at a station where you change from one
ticket to another; or
(c) one of the tickets is a Season Ticket (which for this purpose does not include
Season Tickets or travel passes issued on behalf of a passenger transport
executive or local authority) or a leisure travel pass, and the other ticket(s) is/are not.

You must comply with any restriction shown on the tickets relating to travel in the trains of
a particular Train Company or Train Companies (see Condition 10).

If you do not comply with this Condition, you will be treated as having joined the train
without a ticket and the relevant parts of Condition 2 or 4 will apply, either to the entire
journey, or from the last station where the train stopped at which at least one of the
tickets was valid.

For the purposes of this Condition, a “leisure travel pass” means any multi-journey ticket
(excluding Season Tickets) valid for:
(i) at least 7 consecutive days; or
(ii) at least 3 days in a period of at least 7 consecutive days
and includes rover tickets, travel passes, flexipass tickets and Britrail passes.

So in this case you should be able to buy a sleeper ticket to the first station that is after 00:00 even if the sleeper doesn't call there and then afterwards use the ALR.

We've seen this kind of thing before. TOC dislikes ticket rules. TOC imposes unenforceable rules. TOC chings pax and grumbles when it loses the appeal.

ScotRail guard wasn't too happy with my WFJ ticket split, he told me it isn't valid and to not do it again.

I would have argued but he let me off so I just kept it quiet.

The ticket issuer at Euston Local tickets also didn't think it was a valid combination and wrote 'RA to WFJ' on my ALR. He also told me to be quiet when I tried to explain to him that it was valid. He wouldn't let me speak.

Can anyone tell me what 'RA to Watford Junction' means?

Usually if anything is stamped onto a ticket regarding restrictions/validity then eithier Validity Advised or Restrictions Advised is stamped/written onto the ticket. I am guessing it is in reference to this.

And in each case the advice is wrong. So, who is instructing their staff to act in contravention of the National Conditions of Carriage? Yet I note the Scotrail guard says "this isn't valid" then to press the point home accepts the ticket as valid.......
