Confirmation this afternoon from Network Rail, that the New Mills landslip works will continue into next month and the line will remain closed. Date is showing as 23rd as per initial rumours.
What would happen to traincrew's route knowledge if the line is closed for too long?

In Post 184 on 22nd May I predicted late September after speaking to the Network Rail people at the New Mills drop in session. At that time that was possibly a worst case scenario but the caution appears to have been justified.

It will be not far off 6 months from the line between New Mills Central and New Mills South Jn losing it's passenger service and the line reopening (assuming it does actually open before the end of September) so some crews who didn't work the route for a few weeks before closure may need refreshes.

View of work on Saturday afternoon of 7th September seen from Hague Bar road bridge, first in down direction towards Marple then in up direction towards New Mills. A lot achieved, a lot still to do!

Some shots from today as the possession all being well is entering it's final week.

Word on the ground today is no.

Only ballast, and track to relay, and then signalling testing to do and all being well it'll be open again on Monday morning.

So Hazel Grove loses 1 train an hour, not that it had said train prior to the closure anyway.

But on the plus side, Romiley is getting its old timetable back. Including Sheffield trains which I honestly thought would continue through Stockport. Mostly because I have lost all trust with Northern recently.

At the New Mills public meeting months ago the Network Rail people speaking about engineering and finance said any earlier reopening date than end of September would be a bonus. RTT has route and times back to normal from the 23rd so that beats the 30th by a week, assuming final work is completed over the weekend.

Awaiting the first Tunstead stone train to pass through New Mills Central this evening, a nice surprise of 37 685 "Loch Arkaig" in West Coast livery - brought back nice memories of bothy walking trips on the West Highland line and sleepers 37 hauled.

and while I missed 6L10 at the station (after it went dark at Peak Forest SB on realtimetrains.co.uk) I have just heard it roll smoothly across the River Sett in New Mills.

Line open !

I presume 37685 was on a light engine working. It doesn't seem to be showing on Real Time Trains - any idea what working it was? It appears to be eastbound as it's showing headlights as it passes the eastbound platform in the first photo.

And do you know what hauled 6L10? I presume it was a 66.

RTT also shows the 5M06 Nottingham-Liverpool ECS (departing Nottingham 03.58 yesterday, 03.56 today) and TransPennine Express's 1B61 05.08 Sheffield-Liverpool as having run via New Mills both yesterday and today. I know that before the landslip there was the odd early morning and late evening EMR and TPE train that was booked via New Mills instead of via Stockport to maintain route knowledge, and I presume that was the case with these two workings.

37685 ran light engine to the start of the possession at Marple as 0Z37:

It ran inside the possession up New Mills Central before reversing to travel over the newly laid section and back to Marple, exiting the posession and returning to Carnforth, again as 0Z37:

6L10 is a 66.

5M06 and 1B61 were indeed booked via New Mills Central prior to the landslip. 1L20 (Piccadilly to Nottingham) and 1B98 (Lime Street to Sheffield) are also booked to do so to ensure route knowledge is retained by EM and TPE drivers in both directions.

Possibly one for another thread, but is there no chance of a permanent Manchester to Sheffield via Hazel Grove, even if only two-hourly?

Van Elle has finished the emergency piling to stop embankment slipping into River Goyt

As part of the long term solution for the site, a 160m long piled retaining wall is being installed between the railway and the river to stop the movement of the ground.

Van Elle has recently finished installing 192 sectional flight auger piles, each with a 600mm diameter up to 10.5m deep, that form the wall. It used its Klemm 709 3G rig to carry out the work.

Since May, teams have been working around the clock to stabilise the embankment in the Hague Bar area of New Mills, with activities due to continue until autumn.

The railway was closed for a month in August to allow teams to get on with the stage of repairs to the embankment

Van Elle said it faced “significant obstacles” on site, such as large boulders at the base of the embankment, a narrow time frame, and ongoing embankment slippage.

Despite this, the project was completed two days ahead of the planned three-week schedule.

Saw a guy on a bike arrive at Hazel Grove this morning wanting a train to Chinley. He'd obviously got wind of the direct service between the two stations and was perplexed at having to either go into Manchester and out again, or ride his machine up to Romiley!

Would a Hazel Grove->Chinley Anytime Day Single, route "not via Manchester", be valid Hazel Grove->New Mills Newtown then a walk across New Mills to resume from New Mills Central->Chinley, as well as on the single still remaining 0604 (SuX) direct/through Northern service?

National rail enquiries certainly thinks it is.
Ta. Not quite as useful as the direct (Hazel Grove->Hope Valley) service was during the summer, but still do-able.

It seems odd that RTT doesn't show it as having run between Marple and New Mills. As it was observed at New Mills at 22.14, it must have sat at Marple (or somewhere between Marple and New Mills) for at least 3 hours.

Probably not recorded as it was still under possession while it proved/tested the tracks etc?

The entry to the possession began at Marple, so that is all the RTT will show. It did sit at Marple for a while awaiting clearance into the possession, and again at New Mills Central to cross over and work back over the newly relaid section of track.
