Seems that the last 458 Reading line diagram (0739 from Reading etc) has reverted to 455 operation as of today, bringing all-day 455 operation back to Mon-Fri services.

Will need to wait a couple of days to see if it's a permanent change, but I believe they have been moved in place the 707s absence.

That is back to being booked 455 this week.

I do wonder what the logic is of having 3 sets of 450s on the suburban stuff instead of on the reading diagrams

Today there are only 2 sets of 450s on metro services. The third pair are on the Windsor peaks diagram that had reverted to 458/5, but there are only 3 pairs of 458/5 in use today. But maybe that is booked now?

The real problem seems to be with the 458/4 diagrams. Since being increased to 10 diagrams (5 pairs), there have at most only been 8 units in use (4 pairs) at any one time. This morning it is 6 units (3 pairs) plus a lot of cancellations.

I think it’s down to driver availability as barely anyone from Waterloo has been trained on them so far, plus one or two faults no doubt

I think it may well be both crew and unit issues. I did also see planning error given as a reason for their cancellations on Friday. This should be the same unit diagram, but two different reasons are given for the cancellation which does suggest that there may be more than one underlying problem.

02/09/24 11:03 Weybridge to London Waterloo due 12:26 will be cancelled.
This is due to a shortage of train drivers.
02/09/24 12:52 London Waterloo to Weybridge due 14:08 will be cancelled.
This is due to more trains than usual needing repairs at the same time.

I do know that since the diagram for the 5th pair commenced on 27/08, that only 8 different 458/4 have worked passenger services in the week since.

Looks like similar issues today.

09:22 Waterloo to Weybridge and then the rest of the diagram for the rest of the day cancelled due to "more trains than usual needing repairs at the same time"

Is this a 458/4 diagram? If so I'm surprised that fleet is so stretched they couldn't get another couple of units out. Leaving hour gaps for the Hounslow loop stations which had a 15 minute service not so long ago isn't great. We keep being told passenger numbers aren't back to pre COVID levels but it's hardly surprising given the quality of the service.

I'm sure the SWR Random Excuse Generator is used at times. A couple of weeks ago on Journeycheck a late evening Alton service was showing as cancelled in advance that morning due trespassers on the line (just to be clear - there no trespassers being reported at the time).

Yesterday’s excuse for late departure of the 1750 Waterloo-Reading was “a short notice change to the timetable”. In reality they were desperately trying to find a train to resource it, settling on using a pair of 455s from platform 15 off the late-running 1746 Guildford arrival. That after advertising it as “Wait P20-24”.

At that time, a second entire 458/4 diagram was posted on journeycheck to be cancelled today, but it it was subsequently reinstated. So far, there have not been more than 4 pairs (8 units) in service at the same time since their number of diagrams were increased to 5 pairs (10 units), over a week ago.

One of the three remaining 458/5 diagrams is also short-formed to a single unit today.

Yesterday the 1750 Waterloo to Reading was a single 458/5 in place of a pair of 455s, which looked to have been moved to a Hampton Court service in place of a pair of 458/5s.

Maybe that pair of 707s shouldn't go just yet....

Some better news with the 458/4 diagrams today. Despite 2V05 0648 Hounslow - Waterloo being cancelled, the diagram was commenced with 2R11 0745 Waterloo - Waterloo. 2R07 0717 Twickenham - Waterloo had been cancelled, but was VSTP reinstated. Therefore, for the first time, there are actually five pairs of 458/4 in use this morning.

The former 2*707 diagram is again a 5-car 458 today (458503). The non appearance of 458502 since Tuesday may indicate that it is next in line to make its way to Widnes next week. But, I could be putting two and two together and getting five.

So just down to 4 (02, 03, 14, 19) waiting for refurbishment is that right? Thanks

Sorry, very late to the party here but read up that SWR dropped the plans to use the 458s on the Portsmouth Direct line.

So what is the point of this refurbishment then?

SWR have left themselves badly short of rolling stock due to the 701 fiasco. It's either introduce the 458/4 to limit the reductions in capacity on the Windsor side or (more) planned cancellations.

Plus SWR had apparently signed up to a refurbishment contract with extremely onerous cancellation clauses. At one stage when there was no perceived need for the /4s, it looked as though the newly refurbished trains would be stored for the minimum duration of their lease, then scrapped unused.

The stock related alterations have likely not been uploaded to RTT yet. The 701 diagram is unchanged from next week. What I posted are the 458/4 diagrams. Based on how many have actually ran the past two weeks I am not guaranteeing they will all run, but on paper they are booked 458/4.

The new peak additional Monday-Thursday at 0752 from Surbiton to Waterloo is also booked to start on Monday.
