I'll be making a journey with my mother from a station with barriers to another station with barriers.
The tickets I have purchased are both M-tickets and on my mobile. How will this work going through the barriers?
Would I have to awkwardly pass my phone back for my mum to then scan the other ticket?
I hadn't thought of this when buying the tickets...
Rather than pass the phone back, it is better for the person with the phone to scan the other passenger's ticket, and let them go first, before they go through the barrier themselves.
Personally, I avoid m-tickets as they create all sorts of problems; if the phone with the tickets has a problem, you can be stuffed; e-tickets are so much better. However, looking at your location, I see you may be stuck with m-tickets for some journeys, due to Scotrail's incompetency.
Much safer to just go to the wide barrier and say to the member of staff you have both tickets, show them and they’ll usually let you through.
At stations with less friendly staff if they see you scan multiple times to let people through they’ll assume the worst and jump directly down your throat.
I've not experienced any issues scanning the first ticket, sending the first person through, etc...
Sadly you are right that some barrier staff behave inappropriately towards customers (due to fundamental cultural problems in the rail industry, as discussed in other threads), but there is no way to guarantee avoiding such interactions; approaching staff directly can lead to being told to scan your ticket, as some gateline staff take the view that they should only intervene and carry out a manual check if there is a problem scanning the ticket at the barrier.
