Dears,
Can someone help
We have metro train consists of 8 cars
When checking the train inside the depot we found oil splashes underframe around one wheel
The affected wheel in the fourth car.
No leak detected from the components around the wheel (gear box- coupler- axle box)
Flange lubricator on the first car Aby away fron the affected wheel
We think that oil collected from mainline
But why only this wheel in the middle of the train?

Hello and welcome to the forum.

I can't answer your question, but I'm sure someone with more experience of train maintenance will be along soon.

Is oil under pressure in any of the surrounding possible sources? I can imagine an intermittent fault where where an oil pipe or joint is normally sealed but opens up under dynamic loads when the train is moving. If oil spurts out, then there may not be any trace on the leaking joint, but it gets sprayed onto the underframe.

Do you believe the splashed oil comes from your train? An external source, like an oil container on the track and kicked up by the passing train might explain the odd location.

Hi
Thank you for your reply
We cleaned the train and make a trail run on test track abd after checking we didn't notice any splashes
Then we sent it to mainline and after returning to depot and check splash appeared again
So I thought it is something from mainline
And to analyse why this wheel
I measured the wheels profile
I found the flange hight of thus wheel is the biggest but with a very small difference about 0.09 mm.
I don't know

If the splash, when it recurred, was in the exact same location on the carriage then I would suspect the source is a leak on the train itself.

The suggestion by @Nottingham59 of a leak which opens up intermittently in motion would sound the most logical in such circumstances. Being close to one wheel, I would suspect a bearing - does anything on that train need topping up more frequently than it should?

Is it possible, perhaps, to fit the train with a couple of cameras watching the area around the splash then sending it out on another test run? The footage from those cameras should reveal where the source is.

Thanks Peter
I'm sure there is no source from the train
We will try by camera

I'm finding this very intriguing, so please do let us know the outcome if you are able to.

A thought, though - if the source was external, would not every single train be affected? If it is just this one, that would really imply something on this individual train is the cause.

Dear @HusseinHamdy

I have sent you a private message regarding your issue.
I'll further analyse the problem with my colleagues at the Engineering and Maintenance department of CP - Comboios de Portugal E.P.E.

Cheers,
