I don't think they did Elsenham because of sharp curves on both sides of the level crossing or something

Neither the Bishops Stortford-Cambridge or Cambridge-Kings Lynn electrifications included signalling changes.

Not sure why it began but it became more prolific when Basingstoke services started. We do lots of East Suffolk work with long layovers in Ipswich. Ipswich depot briefly did Yarmouth around 25 years ago but have never signed Sheringham.

I don't think any are particularly easy to get to for a casual visitor though

A couple of weeks ago, we came across a manually operated crossing (Wheel in signal box) on the road that runs from Brompton by Sawdon, on the A170 between Thirsk and Scarborough, and Sherburn (on the A64 between Malton and Scarborough) My old gradient profile book doesn't show a Sherburn box, so I think it might be Ganton. All controlled by semaphores too.

The box near Sherburn is known as 'Weaverthorpe' - apparently a name chosen by the NER to avoid confusion with 'Sherburn-in-Elmet' and others. It was opened in 1873.

To add some more:

• Goxhill and Oxmarsh Crossing on the Barton line. Both of these are operated via a gate wheel in the box.
• Crabley Creek on the Gilberdyke to Hull Line.
• Lebberston and Gristhorpe on the Hull to Scarborough Line.
• Hessary, Marston Moor, Wilstrop, Hammerton Road and Whixley on the Harrogate Line.
• Littleport, Whittlesea and Dullingham in East Anglia.
• Spittal Crossing in Berwick.

In addition, Driffield and Nunthorpe have wheel operated lifting barriers if they are of any interest.


That list is unreliable and was out of date the moment it was written. There are no immediate plans to resignal the York to Scarborough Line. Practically everything has been pushed back with no firm date, and local management across the country have been instructed to maintain boxes as if they'll be around for at least the next 20-30 years.

Just to update the wheel operated barriers, Driffield's will be replaced in late-January 2025 with conventional barriers. Work has already commenced on the replacement crossing. Barton Hill (between York & Malton on the York to Scarborough line) has the same type of crossing, so one will remain in Yorkshire for the time being, at least.

Sleaford West (previously mentioned) is now the last remaining wheel operated set of gates on the East Midlands route.

Other gated crossings are Scropton SB and Hilton crossing on the North Staffs line (Derby - Stoke). Also Fine Lane and Roddidge crossings on the South Staffs (Burton - Lichfield)

On the East Coast Main Line there's also Woodcroft near Peterborough. That crossing spans five tracks.
