EMR Catering Trolley Guard's Signature

Currently en route from Liverpool to Norwich with EMR.

As the catering trolley reached the rear of the train, the steward knocked on the guard's door, saying 'I need a signature', and the guard duly signed something. How widespread is the practice of guards formally confirming trolleys have operated the full length of the train?

I can't imagine that the signature will be about confirming that the trolley has operated the full length of the train. IME the signatures tend to be where complimentary items have been given out, e.g. during disruption, or similar.

How do you know that is what the signature is for?

It is what it seems, the guard signs the paperwork to confirm the trolley was on board the train.

They can also sign other issues on the hosts report (unable to go through due to overcrowding etc) or for free issues.

It is. There have been things like train reports, journals and so on since the year dot and I have absolutely no idea why such mundanities as the guard signing a colleague's piece of paper would be of any interest to anyone, but I suppose we are all different.

At my TOC as guards we sign for the trolley to say if it’s full and standing and they have needed to get off, or not been able to go through, or to say items have been “free issued” in times of disruption.
