Hi, I had recently travelled on train with a wrong ticket. Basically it was mistakenly booked for the next day, but I travelled the day before. I didn’t notice that until a ticket collector at my end station scanned it. So they took my details and said they would send me a letter. I checked that the fare was same for both the days. Do you think I will be charged a penalty fare.?
But, my biggest worry is I was actually caught for refunding a scanned ticket about 4 years ago(which I never did it again). Back then I was asked to pay the amount plus the admin fee for the investigation and advised me if I request a wrong refund I would be prosecuted. Will the current situation be considered as a second offence and be prosecuted by law? or
Please help me with this
Thank you.

Unfortunately this won’t be a simple Penalty Fare situation.

Anything involving a letter from them about a ticket that was not valid is likely to involve a higher cost to sort out than a £50 penalty fare which is something that has to be issued on the spot to you.

Thanks for the quick reply.
Am ok with higher penalty fare apart than prosecution.

You can avoid prosecution as it sounds like a minor error. But best you get advice here on what to do as things develop. Did they take your address down correctly as far you know?

You probably need to wait for them to write to you and make sure you get and reply to their letter or e mail. People here will advise you what to say.

Which train company are you dealing with?

I'd expect this to be dealt with by an out of court settlement, as long as you co-operate with the train company.

If you post a copy of the letter the train company send you, along with your draft reply in this thread we will be happy to proof read it for you.

Can you state which railway company this was and the stations involved in your journey.

It’s not good that you have been investigated before. But it was quite a long time ago. You will have to see what they say to you.

But you will get good advice here on things.

What will happen is that in due course Northern Railway will write to you and the letter could be a rather threatening looking letter which essentially asks for your version of events / explanation (so this is a chance for you to reply, apologise, explain the nature of the mistake you made, and ask if you can resolve the matter without any prosecution) or it might be a letter that Northern use that they called a 'Fixed Penalty Notice' which usually asks people to pay £100 to resolve the matter. Or I suppose they may write about something else.

Whatever happens, people here can advise you what you need to do when you hear from them. Important to keep an eye out for that letter or e-mail (including in spam) as I say.

Hello everyone, I have received a letter from Northern today and surprisingly they have asked me to pay 15.70( the actual price of the ticket)., which I just did. Thank you everyone for the advice and help.
