January 2025 entry into service but completion in December this year.
Interesting thought it was for December 2025

Reported to be in use by 769s but not yet 802s.

End of this year (Boxing Day has been mentioned for going live).
Just seen a 769 depart Victoria on electric so confirms they are being used, would guess the 802s need a software update before they can go on Electric power.

I believe its the equipment on the ground at Stalybridge that needs sorting, no issues on the trains themselves. 769s are fine of course as they never go further than Staly.

As others have said upthread, it's the APCO (Automatic Power Change Over) balises in the area that are yet to be commissioned. Once those are commissioned, the balises further west can be decommissioned and removed. (The same modus operandi applied at Maidenhead during the earlier phases of GWEP as the 800s arrived, IIRC.)

I would guess this will be done before December. Another thing with the 802s ive noticed is the rear most doors still dont open at LEG despite the platform extensions being open for 8 months.

Back on topic, has funding been confirmed for the stretch between Stalybridge and Church Fenton?

Stalybridge to Church Fenton is a long way and includes sections that are at very different stages of development. On the one hand it includes Huddersfield to Westtown, where major works are going on - see for example Robert Stenhouse's photos:

On the other hand it includes Stalybridge to Standedge and Standedge to Huddersfield, which are not even mentioned in the recently published update to Network Rail's Enhancements Delivery Plan, and seem not to be due for completion until well into the 2030s:

There have been two big releases of funding for TRU as a whole, adding to £6.5 billion. According to the Modern Railways article I summarised in #7868, there are another two dollops still to come to bring the total to £11 billion but I don't know when they will come, or whether inflation will result in the eventual figure being much more or the scope being much reduced. One of the confusing aspects is that the dollops of funding don't seem to be linked to specific sections of route.

It doesn't help when Network Rail says that ETCS, not a trivial task, will be installed on the route, but that it will follow conventional resignalling.
£11 billion seems such an impossibly large sum, especially if it excludes work on new NPR route sections.
I doubt Grant Shapps knew all the details when he announced that figure, but it might have found its way into Treasury forecasts.

I've lost track. What the status of the electrification between Stalybridge and Guide bridge?
The only likely use is with TPE 802s sent via Guide Bridge into Piccadilly.
It appears 802s are waiting for switching capability to be commissioned at Stalybridge before using the wires to Pic/Vic.
Terminating 769s don't need to switch.

Please correct me if I'm wrong, but my impression is that in other places on the network where 80x's switch automatically between diesel and electric, the balise prompting the electric-to-diesel switch is placed a considerable distance before the end of the wires. (Edit: for example, it was once mentioned in another thread that it's before Bridge of Allan for the end of the wires at Dunblane.)

At Stalybridge, we have a low tunnel almost immediately after the station. So perhaps it's too much to hope for that, when the equipment is commissioned, 802s will run into Stalybridge from Manchester on electric and then lower their pans in the station.

I saw somewhere that the changeover points were to be west of the station, on each route.
ie unless stopping at Stalybridge, they would be on diesel through the station.

APCO also to be installed at Castlefield Jn and Allerton Jn to facilitate electric running for diversions to Liverpool via Piccadilly & CLC (i.e. not routed via Chat Moss).
  • Electric Liverpool - Allerton
  • Diesel Allerton - Castlefield
  • Electric Castlefield - Piccadilly - Guide Bridge - Stalybridge
There are some technicalities about the differing placement for Up & Down directions.

What a very sensible plan.
Something that could work through Leeds too.

Quite often diverted Eastbound 802s on the CLC 'pan-up' when they are held at the signals approaching Castlefield Jcn.

Given the industry wants to promote its green credentials you would expect it to be better coordinated with the energisation.

I’ve just passed under the Church Fenton to Micklefield line north of Sherburn in Elmet and there are some piles in place, so good to see visible signs of progress, albeit on only a relatively short additional stretch.

Quote a few piles in place Church Fenton to Micklefield and also Garforth to East Garforth and just beyond. Don't know if they are just using spare resources in possessions.

As I mentioned in #8146 there are month-by-month work schedules for Leeds to Thorpe Park and Garforth to Church Fenton on the TRU website.

Not been over the route for a few months, so pleased to see much progress.

Two things of note, not seen on this thread.

A lot of work happening at the site of Uppermill Jn, which replaces Diggle Jn. Foundations for a new relay room (?), TPWS and AWS equipment for the new signals on both lines.

Track and points laid where Hillhouse depot will be operational.

I assume the plan is still for the former Hillhouse shed site to be used as a temporary station for Huddersfield while the big work is taking place in the station area?
Can't recall if the longer term plan is then to use this site for a new stabling location, but this would make sense with the loss of the current sidings at Huddersfield station. Hope the security will be sufficient though, given the reputation of the area.
I did not know this! What is the reason and will there be additional functionality?
I think it's to enable linespeed improvements by moving the end of the loop to allow more favourable geometry, which AIUI will see more use by passenger services on the upgraded route.

Not sure why they have re-named this - Uppermill is well over a mile from Diggle at the other end of Saddleworth Viaduct, and Diggle Junction box was definitely nearer Diggle. Or are they doing something near the old divergence of the Micklehurst Loop (which still isn't particularly near Uppermill)?

Press release

Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU), in partnership with Kirklees Council and Canal & River Trust, has released its plans to upgrade the canal towpath between Shepley Bridge Marina and Station Road. The rail upgrade programme will also provide improvements to Mirfield Memorial Park.

The proposals come as part of TRU’s ‘First and Last Mile’ programme, which aims to improve journeys to and from the stations along the route between Manchester and York.

The innovative scheme has pressed ahead with plans for the Mirfield station area and is currently running a public consultation until 31st August 2024. Park and canal users, residents and businesses are being encouraged to give their views online at www.kirklees.gov.uk/beta/countryside-parks-and-open-spaces/mirfield-memorial-ground.

Before on-site work begins, people can also view the plans and concept designs at a drop-in event at Mirfield Memorial Ground on Thursday 29th August between 3pm and 6pm. Staff from Kirklees Council and Canal & River Trust will be present to answer any questions and welcome thoughts from any interested parties.

This ought to be a good news story.

However, look at it from the point of view from a passenger at the only intermediate station on this route, who might reasonably ask whether it means they will receive an improved service.

Northern's Victoria-Stalybridge service calling at Ashton was previously half hourly. Now it has been reduced to hourly with little prospect of the half hourly service being restored in the near future, and with a third of the reduced service routinely cancelled. All those years of disruption, with a much worse service at the end of it.
I understand that the Manchester Victoria to Stalybridge half hourly service was abandoned together with an extension all stations to Liverpool via Chat Moss.

Its even worse than than because at one point Ashton had a 3 trains and hour service and 4 in the peaks, now as above it barely has one so as said its a horrendous downgrade!

Also in regards to Diggle Loop I was under the impression it was it was being removed entirely?
