Hi

I made the following journey from Wivenhoe, Essex to Manchester Piccadilly and I'm wondering what delay repay is due if any and who to claim it from?

Paper Off peak return Wivenhoe-Liverpool Street Greater Anglia
Boarded 12.23 expecting to get into Liverpool Street at 13.25

Bought from TrainSplit-
Advance Single Euston-Nuneaton Avanti West coast
14.13-15.09

Advance Single Nuneaton-Stockport Avanti West coast
15.10-16.09

Any time single Stockport-Manchester Piccadilly
Expected itinerary 16.10-16.19

The first leg of the journey into Liverpool Street was delayed and arrived about 13.57, meaning I was not able to catch the 14.13 from Euston. The next train that met requirements of my split ticket was 15.13 so I attempted to board that, explained the situation but was refused boarding by revenue staff at the gate. They sent me to ticket office but due to queues wasn't able to catch 15.13. They endorsed me to travel on 15.33 instead (not via Nuneaton) and I arrived Piccadilly 17.44.

So total delay was 1.25 but tickets were bought separately. Delay was a combination of original delayed train ~30mins, but then not being allowed to board the next available train. Am I able to claim delay repay, if so should it be separate claims for the separate parts of the journey?

Claim Delay Repay for the entire journey Wivenhoe-Manchester Piccadilly from Greater Anglia. 1h25m which was your actual delay. Don’t be surprised if your first claim is rejected by “automated” systems, just keep on going until a human gets involved. 50% of your initial off-peak return and 100% of your three singles, I think.

Where's your ticket from Liverpool Street to Euston? Presumably you purchased one of the tickets to either start or end at London Zone U1* (or held a Travelcard already etc).

Otherwise it would appear to not be a through journey, and ineligible for delay repay.

Should have mentioned: used contactless for this part

You've made a bit of an error there. You essentially have separate journeys, and you'd completed your first one entirely by the time you'd reached London.

May be worth trying a claim, but strictly speaking you are not eligible. You must make sure you have your tickets at the commencement of your journey. I would do this by email, making clear what has happened and what tickets were held, rather than trying to use an automated web form.

You're incredibly lucky they allowed you to travel on a different train from Euston.

You are eligible for DR for the first part of your journey, however.

Thanks for the reply- can you unpack that for me?

Re: "make sure you had tickets at the commencement of your journey"- why is this significant? What conditions require this?

Re: "you're incredibly lucky they allowed you to travel" I thought generally with advance tickets if you are delayed on a previous part of the journey you are allowed to take next train? Including on split tickets?

This has come up before. I think it's more accurate to call it a grey area rather than clearly either right or wrong, and definitely worth a claim still.

The tickets do join up, at London Terminals.

At certain times of the day it is not possible to make the journey by underground. We had a recent discussion about Trainline who had retailed a combination that didn’t include cross-London transport as it was very late at night and the itinerary said ‘transfer’.
