Cardiff will be starts at 4am and finishes just after 1am, then everything in between. Shifts vary between approx 6 and 10hrs.

Depends.... Mainline guards have 2am starts, mainly to prep MK4 sets.

We also have a couple 10pm starts that finish around 8am.

Does one of those involve a 3hr nap in Hereford?
If you can get any sleep, yes! Been plenty of times I've gone and got myself a pizza and watched some netflix to pass the time

One of them is now at Gloucester and there's another where you work the last one to Ebbw Vale, then take a train ECS to Swansea to work the first service east. Although, on a Friday night this also includes a MK4 prep.

Question for thought. How long be OPC Conductor tests [RAAT, SCAAT, TCT] valid for with TFW? Like if you sat them, passed them, then failed at final interview, do thay have validity for a set time afterward? Thanks.

I was told today that it should be three years, as far as I'm aware it was still two. Recruitment are the best people to ask as there seems to be a different answer depending on who you ask.

Odd this then as I sat the lot and did everything autumn 2022 and have been asked to start them again...

No idea personally - again, it appears to be a different answer depending on who you ask. I'm not sure on the exact requirements for previous test passes to be accepted. Sorry.

According to the available diagrams Cardiff Valleys have an 04.54 start and 23.36 Finish, so not too bad it looks like.

Probably worth pointing out that the Valley lines are going through their biggest transformation in history - and the rosters today may bear little in common with the rosters next year or beyond. Whilst it's unlikely that you'll be required to work nights on the Valleys, there are several depots at TfW where the guards do work them, including Cardiff mainline as mentioned above, and any future TfW guard reading this needs to bear that in mind.

Earliest start is 0400. Afternoons start at 12 (there is a 12-8 standby shift). The last late shifts start at 5pm (there is a 5pm "As Required" and another 5pm standby shift). Last finish is 0138.

Hi all,

Are there many people waiting to be assigned a course for the role of Trainee Train Conductor? Not sure if further courses are likely to run this year.

Hoping we all get a dates soon. :)

Mod note - I’ve just tweaked the thread title to create a more generic discussion around Transport for Wales conductor role and recruitment.

Valleys Conductor Pool June vacancy people - anyone had the TCT test yet? Done the SCAAT and RAAT but not had invite for the TCT test yet. Hoping somehow I've not borked the RAAT.

I'm in the Cardiff Mainline pool, waiting for a medical and start date. I've only been there since June but already feels like forever lol Hopefully it will be sooner rather than later though

Has anyone else completed their SCAAT as part of the June 2024 recruitment? How long does it generally take to hear back

Odd - I received the SCAAT first, then the RAAT. Am pleased to say that received the TCT today so have a week to complete that in.
To answer your question, sometime sit's 24-48hrs after the closing date, other times it can be upto a week. If you're in the Valleys Talent Pool, I suspect timings may be more relaxed as it's a Talent Pool as opposed to urgent open vacancies.

Hello all,

Just made an account here. I just completed my SCAAT last week and the cut off was on the 12th. Haven't heard anything yet. I am looking to transition from Police to Trains. Given I have applied for a talent pool position, any realistic timeframe of job offer if I were to be successful at all stages? Cheers.

I’ve been in the pool for 14 months now.

What's the difference in Ts and Cs between Valleys and Mainline from Cardiff? Understand the nature of the work is different - Valleys is local and more short-stopping work whereas Mainline is long distance and often more gaps betwene stops but are there differences in the Ts and Cs, salary, a/l and also - job security? Many thanks

I'm open to correction, but I think part of the last pay deal got rid of the remaining few T&C differences between Valleys and Mainline. Salary has been the same for a while. TFW's committment to keep a guard on all services applies to the Valleys as much as Mainline so in theory jobs there should be just as secure.

Obviously if they ever did want to go down the DOO route it would be easier to implement on Valleys than on Mainline, but there seems to be no appetite for that at all either right now, and any attempt to bring it in would meet a very strong resistance.

TCT - Ticket Check Tests. Managed to get to about 30/31. Am rather sure I got them all right (days, stn 1, stn 2, peak/offpeak, duscount applied or not) but am wondering if 30 will be enough? Am aware for a 10min test not really expected to finish the lot (rather like the SCAAT tests pages) but wondering what a decent acore would be? Thanks
