I hold a 26-30 Railcard and am looking at tickets from Leeds to Sheffield at around 0800 next week.

Northern will sell me an advance single on the 0837 which costs £3.85 with my Railcard, discounted from £5.90 (bought from LNERs app)

However I was of the understanding that there was a minimum fare of £12 prior to 10am. Would the above fare be valid?

The fare will be valid because the minimum fare is not applicable to Advance tickets.

Minimum fare of £12 doesn't apply to advance tickets with the 26-30 railcard. Or for Off Peak/Anytime single or return tickets if it's a Saturday/Sunday or Public Holiday.

For completeness it's worth noting that with a 16-25 Railcard, the £12 minimum fare on walk-up tickets doesn't apply during the months of July and August. But the 26-30 Railcard sadly doesn't have the same July/August exemption, so for walk-up tickets the £12 minimum fare stands on weekday mornings.

Ultimately if you just enter the Railcard you have, and select the train you intend to travel on, any ticket you're sold will be valid for that train.

This is interesting, I have a 16-25 railcard and was not aware of the above restriction. Does the minimum £12 include the discount?

Yes, so before Mon-Fri 10am:
  • any walk-up fare that's £12 or below won't be discounted at all,
  • any walk-up fare that's between £12.05 and £18.20 (soon £18.05 after the upcoming rounding changes :( ) is only partially discounted down to £12,
  • any walk-up fare that's £18.25 / £18.10 or above will be fully discounted
